I have a derelict Unimog. The braking system is assisted by air pressure, like a conventional vacuum servo in reverse. It is not like air brakes on a HGV or PSV.
It has an air compressor, regulator, unloader valve, and a tank and booster (servo), plus the pipework. Most of these things are in a bad way. I would replace them, but they are frighteningly expensive, and I don't have the money these days for a very limited use vehicle.
I cant convert to a vacuum system, because firstly, there is no room for a servo (too big) but more importantly, a vacuum system does not generate enough pressure.
I am thinking about a Hydro Boost system instead. This works on oil pressure instead of air, which is good, as there will be no condensation laying around in components to cause corrosion.
Does anyone have any direct experience of these systems ?
