Will rebar damage a former?

I borrowed a friends hydraulic former a while back for bending up some 20mm round bar.

This thing -

If i were to use it for rebar, would the ridges damage the formers?

Neither of us know, and id rather not find out the wrong way!

Does anyone here know?

Wrap an old bicycle inner tube round the bar. It should not harm the former.
But as it is a friends tool, just look after it.

I think I'd try a sacrificial piece of thin steel sheet between rebar and the formers - it'll bend around the inside of the former, but should be enough to allow the rebar to slide over it and gouge it, rather than the formers.

Probably wouldn't damage the former - but you'd only know by trying it - and if it does, then it's too late - and it's never good to return mates equipment with an apology.

If the formers are steel I'd happily use that bender . But I'm not the one doing it !

Yes.
I built a similar and it gouged up the dies, so took a drill bushing and sliced it in half, tack welded it over top.

rebars lousy hard steel and would probably gouge them a bit when it creeps round glad its not mine if you do

I think the forces are too high for thin rubber.
I would use a sacrificial piece of something like tire sidewall.
Figure one use each, might get torn up badly.

Would you want to? Rebar benders pull a very sharp bend to keep the bar where it needs to be within the concrete, a long radius bend is going to try and cut the corner.

Its not for concrete work. "Art" stuff...

Its fine though. I don't even want the rebar look really. Its just that I have some knocking about and it would save me buying round bar.

From the thread answers I'm not going to bother though.

No. Its a bit of rebar, but bent with a different method, which didn't really work.

Id not be asking the question if I'd already tried it!

If it is for art then heat can be applied to bent it to any shape you want.

I tried that - i had my MAPP torch on it for an age, and it made virtually no difference. I forget exactly what thickness it is, but about 22mm or somthing. I think it was just too much of a heat sink for itself.

For any steel 20mm in diameter you're going to need a bigger torch....

Maybe oxy-propane ?
Or a forge ?
