Do theses have a load rating.

I have a site that has a 3 cylinder air cooled engine driving a 24vdc generator. To provide emergency power to life critical systems.

The on site staff fitted a new one in Dec 24, saying it was one they got rom a local suppler, it has signs of failing already, after 5 hours run time.

The Manufacture of the equipment do not support this set up any more, the new ones are Based on a Honda driving an alternator etc.

The original one has no numbers on it.

Does it have any arrows moulded into the outer surface ?, not the faces, these are often only reinforced internally to take a load in one direction and the arrows must face the flange, any arrow to face any flange, if the arrows are facing the bolt heads it was fitted the wrong way round! you can see the thicker parts where the Kevlar string reinforcement is wound around the metal tubes.

If it's rubber it would depend on how long it had been in stock, left in sunlight etc the rubber dries out. Fake part or oil damage. Hillman Imp ones were fine for years till the oil got to them.

Are you familiar with "Fenner Couplings"?
(A lot of older gensets with an output shaft to a twin-bearing alternator employed a Fenner Coupling).
It's a few years ago, but Fenner were still going last time I checked.

All couplings have ratings for load, speed, vibration etc.

One hopes they have a manual for it, and an original spare parts list that gives info on the original component. And then go to a different supplier who knows how to size them, assuming no-one knows anything about the load the generator imparts, the torque of the driving engine and its torsional effect on the coupling - three cylinders doesn't sound exactly the smoothest.

Cheap rubber isn't rubber, it's a small portion of rubber and a load of fillers. This is the reason cheap rubber perishes as you look at it. Buy the best you can afford from a reputable company, they are still out there , you won't like the price.
