Lectricity Incomer size and relocation

I will be needing to relocate and possibly extend our electricity incomer cable. This will likely involve in complete replacement.

Anyone have any idea what cross section it it likely to be ? We are on a TT earth system. It comes to the end of the garden via overhead poles, and from there underground.

Years ago I put the digger through it, despite CAT scanning it first. I rejoined it with a resin filled connector (I know, I know) but my poor memory is telling me it was single core ??? Would this even be likely ?

I am thinking of direct burial rather than a duct as we have rodents here. Having said that, the duct will be a U shape, so why could it not be filled with water ? After all, the cable sheathing is waterproof ....... or supposed to be !

Unless it is a private supply then this work needs to be done by the DNO and is not a DIY job.

The cable is likely to either be concentric cable or split concentric cable, both have a single core and then either a combined neutral and earth surrounding it or separate neutral and earth's around it.

Yes the cable is waterproof but it is not submersible, it can withstand water but is not designed to be permanently submerged.

Thanks for that Dave. I know our supplier will have to connect it. I was thinking about doing as much as I can for convenience really, as I would prefer to bury it, and with an eye on costs of course.

Concentric cable makes sense now, I was sure it was not two core stuff.

Its a bit of an obstacle course here ATM and a bit like musical chairs, I have to move things around as I work.

My parents had their supply buried. It didn't cost them a thing because the neighbours had to relocate theirs due to an extension. It had been mentioned that Dad had a digger so Western Power said if he'd dig the trenches (one for the neighbour and continue it for my parents) my parents wouldn't be charged as the neighbours footed the "bill". Doing the digger work and getting the trench prepped saved a fair fortune, they just pulled the cable through, laid the tape over it and supervised the initial backfill.

With our new connections, I did the digger stuff, put the conduit in, rubber tape over the top etc as spec after the boards initial visit. Guys pulled cables and connected up, saved 3.5k.

Definitely do the digging and laying any duct they require yourself, along with installing the meter box. But get them out to survey it first as they should give you written instructions as to exactly what they need, how deep etc etc

is it at reg depth ? if accidently nip it and then call them out

happend with a builder using a digger when he hit it he went for a tape measure and said good not berried at the right depth call the board to fix and cost nothing
