ford brake carrier thread repair kit help

just wrecked the thread on the mk1 focus brake carrier , a quick search reveals a few kits with traditional heli coil style inserts or these others ive not seen before

assume these fit with the brim/lip on the outside and pull into the new hole? not sure what the allen key does ?

whats the prefered fix? thanks

Complete guess: stops the insert from rotating until the splines bite into the hole. So it goes into the back of the insert until it has pulled itself into place.

I had the same happen on my Skoda, I bought the same kit from eBay. From what i recall, it’s a while back, the plate is used to centralise the drill off the other bolt & keep it square. The insert is the pulled in with a bolt. The tap I didn’t need, but presumably if the insert is deformed when pulled in. It was all straight forward when I came to do it, no idea what the Allen key is for though, fill an empty space in the box

I’ve had a 9mm helicoil kit for 20 years that has got me out of trouble a couple of times, I bought it by mistake off of eBay after a very late bid on what I thought was an 8 mm kit

I dont like the idea. There must be hundreds of scrap ones at the breakers and on ebay for pennies, likely cheaper than the kit.

The Ford 7mm key, my sister had a Mk.III escort in the 80's and wanted me to change the front pads, I'd heard about them using a 7mm key, but although I had a fairly comprehensive toolkit, I didn't have a 7mm key so went and bought one for the job, once I'd got the wheel off I found the carrier was held by a pin secured with an R clip, pulled the pin and pivoted the carrier up to change the pads so I didn't need the 7mm key after all, still got it and never used it
