Modding A uPVC Door Lock

Fitted a s/hand uPVC back door a few years ago. All good except the handle was a bit old, rattly and tarnished. SWMBO was always moaning about it.

Fired off a couple of pics to a favourite spares place and the guy came back saying our handle was a Fullex, no longer made but here was the equivalent that would fit.

I was on the phone and just put the bits recommended in the basket and hit buy. New handles, Euro lock and keys. Not cheap either.

It's turned up and I've fitted it. Only then did it dawn it has no thumb lock to keep the latch open. We find it really useful if just nipping out to the garden.

I'm thinking I could simply drill the new handle, maybe slip a 3D printed pack in the back and transfer the gubbins over?

You have a euro lock cylinder there by the looks of it.

Best thing would be to measure what size of one you have there and order a euro lock with the thumbturn option. Ebay, amazon etc will have them but make sure you look at a diagram and measure your old lock before ordering.

Or did that old thumbturn do something else(?)

Can you show a picture of the backside of the new one. That will tell you what is possible and what is necessary to retain the shaft of the thumbturn.

Looking at the old one, I cannot see how a 3DP part would be needed. If you can prise off the starlock washer on the old one, everything should just drop out. If the old one is beyond repair, you could cut it in half to release the parts you need as that may make releasing that washer easier and non-destructive to the washer.

From the inside, you pulled the original handle down and it pulled the latch in. You then turned the thumbscrew to keep it pulled in.

It let you push the door to from either side then lift the handle up and it "locked" on the 5 lever locks.

A bit miffed at the seller tbh. My fault for not looking closer I know but when I queried were the thumb lock types available they wrote:

"Hi, they no longer make them with the thumb for the latch as all it does is hold the latch in they removed this facility on later door locks

As people found it sometimes jammed in the locked position so the fabricators started removing it so they stopped making the handles to suit it

Dunno. Seems to be other makes available. Don't want to really spend another £30-40.

I'd modify the new one. If you need a new Starloc they're not too difficult to find.

I carefully measured, marked and drilled the new handle. Used an M10 nylon washer under the Starlock. Other than the thumbscrew is brass it's done. Might print a black cover to go over the thumbscrew and glue it on.
