another new roof ???

rather than mess about with patching etc.
I've decided to get the roof replaced.
the old roof is chip board and tarmac on top.
it leaked a lot a few years ago and I put a tin roof on top.
needless to say the chip board roof was mishaped in other words sunken in place's.
I Couldn't lay the tin roof flat with out it shaping to the original roof.
which in places left puddles of water.
this isn't a problem when it rains etc but snow!
snow and ice,this create a dam,water has now where to go accept up and through the tin sheet.
OK I didn't seal and I should've.
have a couple of roofing guys round.
the 1st one said he uses 3/4" ply wood,seal all the joints and lay bitumen roll down,sealed etc etc no price is given as yet.
the second roofer said use's 8mm ply wood,fibre glass sheeting and all the usual stuff. guesstimate price is between £1400/£1600.
both will send me the paper work etc.
now I know glass fibre etc is good stuff as I've got it on my dormer house front and back.
no doubt the 1st guy will be cheaper.
he said it will be guaranteed for 5 years.
in the 14 years he has been in business no one has called him back.
(I said no one will if your work is shyt will they,I wouldn't,I'd get some one else to do the job).
I'd do it myself but I can't leave the roof bare over night if I encounter problems.all my gear(? probably about £3,000) inc 2 motorbikes ( about £8,000 worth).
the g/fibre man recon it'll take 3 days to do but would have the plywood laid on the same day as removal.
not sure what is best to do. go a head and get it f/glass roof or get plywood laid down and tin roof it myself?
what do you guys use? or recon

New Roof

Insulated steel box profile 65--100 mm thick lightweight strong double skin fibreglass roof lights available in same profile,quick and probablly similar in price,check out the roof in B&Q super stores when you are in there next,its the way I am going, also minimises noise and condensation,HTH

Is it a flat roof or pitched? Flat roofs are always a pain, my neighbours had the same problem and solved it by putting a pitched (gable) roof on top of the flat roof and using box profile tin. Personally I prefer old fashioned galvanised corrugated metal (aesthetically) but it is heavier.

can't you put your stuff in one of them short term storage places and then do the roof yourself, you'll save on the labour and the storage isn't that expensive.

21ft long x 12ft wide and its a flat roof.
it is joined to next door neighbours garage to but he can't afford to get his roof done,
he won't be able to to do till the weather get a bit warmer(g/fibre)

Buy a few tarps from Argos for your stuff before you start stripping the old stuff. Lift the crinkly tin sheets, nail some 3x2 on top of the old stuff and put your sheets back on with appropriate seal between them. If you nail a piece length ways you can increase the angle so you get more fall and better run off. I used corrugated bitumen sheets from Wickes and put it on top of 19mm ply with a sheet of blue plastic DPC between them and it's lasted 12 years so far with no problems.

Glass Fibre roofing is sh17!!

We currently have one on the flat roof, they don't lay flat, or this one hasn't anyway so it gathers water, ice, snow, leaves, etc, etc.

They also don't use lead flashing apparently, so over a period of time it leaks behind the makeshift flashing when the silicone gives up. Ours has been repaired 4 times since August 19th, and is being replaced FOC in the spring. I did suggest adding a slight rake to the roof, but this has been overlooked at the moment.

Put new OSB sheets on,then use this rubber membrane - http://www.klaudiacontrolsystems.co.uk/index.html. It comes in one piece so no joints to leak and it's just like laying a carpet. The suppliers are really helpful if you have questions.

get some cheap tarpaulins to protect the roof until finished
rip off the old stuff lay some new 3/4 inch ply and buy some new tin roof and lay it yourself you will save £ssss
and will last for years.

guarantees are only as good as the workmans word should they shut up shop a day after you get the roof done you have no guarantee

Quality FG roofs will have a minimum 1:40 fall and use lead flashings which may be bonded in or not depending on the application. Personally I only ever specify Polyroof

If you are able a pitched roof is always a better choice IMO, be aware tho that if it is next to or attached to the house ..metal roofs are noisy

I'll do it myself along with my son.
but I think I'll get the guys to lay the 3/4" ply and I'll lay the rubber myself.
it look as though the rubber will cost me £270/£280.
if I do it all myself and damage next doors roof I may have to pay to get theirs fixed to.
if I leave to the guys just lay the roof,they will know better than me.
