We had a new chief engineer come aboard a ship I was working on, young and full of beans, he wanted to make his mark….
First major job was cleaning out and painting the bilges in the engine room and compressor room. They not been touched for years on this particularly ship, though they are meant to be as layers of thick old oil and dirt are a fire hazard.
You’d not believe the huge pile of tools, spare parts, pens, coins, safety glasses, ear defenders, etc, that were dug out of the 2” thick layer in the bilges.
