Tool Thefts - depressing reading

Do the police actually have the scanners ? if not then its probably a waste of time . Same with smartwater probably

I get calls from the police every now and again to identify loose horses as they don't even have a scanner for the microchips in them.

This is the problem,
There are several types of tag (plus all sorts of other things)

If there was one standard method of tag/chip/whatever then it might be possible to get the police to use them. Some sort of rfid tag could probably be used with smartphones by members of the public even.

But, nobody would make any money from that so there are just a load of competing commercial offerings meaning no one can have all the scanners (or the time) for all of them

I dont think there is an answer to this TBH if they want to get in your van they will and with battery cutters or portable gas axe theres nothing you can really do about it . I always park my rear doors against the house and although its a pain my latest van has no side door so in theory trickier but could just cut a hole in the side !
Thinking back some of the tools ive bought over the years may have been nicked but how would i know ? im always looking for a bargain but you cant really ask is it nicked mate... Someone else will buy it anyway. I do usually look to see if there is a plausable reason to be selling but can never be certain

This is nothing new and i cant see it changing , when I was a kid my old man knew a copper most of our tv's and videos came from the stuff they had recovered from some scrote.....

Not all forces used to have a scanner, they had to borrow one. Problem withe smart phone app would be scumbags using it to find and remove. With the Datatag chips I used to insert one in the seatfoam and the other in the wiring loom.

Not wishing to disagree or be argumentative - how exactly do they show proof of ownership?
I have a workshop full of tools and can honestly say I couldn't find a receipt for any item

Know someone who had a bunch of tools pinched and reported it to the police. While later police at the door saying they had recovered some stolen tools fitting the description but needed proof of ownership.
He asked police if the ratchet and 19mm socket were in the box? "No" was plods reply, "that's because they are sitting on the bench over there" was the owners reply pointing at the ratchet.
Tools handed over.

Just been to greggs some guy walked in literally cleared a shelf of sarnies and walked out ! staff could do nothing just shouted at him but he knows they cant do anything

Brazen and know theres little or no consequences to being caught

There’s room inside battery tools for a AirTag like thing, might worth considering. Milwaukee have the chip thing in them but it takes 30 seconds to remove

Security and gadjets are not the answer….culture needs to change, where these ferrel behaviours are not tolerated and are severely punished if caught.

I was kind of thinking sometime in the future if the police asked question where the tools come from and there was a postcode on them they could trace back to the owner.

The police had no interest whatsoever about what had been stolen, forensics came and swiped the lever bar they had used to pry the boxes open and took fingerprints and dna from me to match to my own bar but weren’t concerned with what had been stolen or whether they had identification marks on them.I guess the concern of what had been stolen is down to the insurance company.

ive seen the old bill looting a motorcycle shop that had been broken in to at 2 in the morning, no cameras then . who is to say what the scrotes had taken

I work in Police stations for part of my job and I was told but quite a few sergeants was to not leave any valuables lying around

Of course, tax evasion is a crime. Listed under miscellaneous income, but after allowable expenses; paper, pens, a suitable desk and chair and an allowance for office running costs. Then's there's the vehicle expenses if I deliver them too. Shoe leather if I use those shoes solely for business purposes.

That is simply not going to happen sadly,Instead the thief has to fear the victim .

In Finland there was a spate of Taxi drivers being robbed,the Government allowed Taxi drivers to carry a concealed pistol,resulting in no further robberies after a couple of thieves get dropped.

I am not advocating this for the UK,however if as now you physically intervene in a theft you can potentially and very likely find yourself prosecuted.

I was watching a Police program and musing about a lone female (but butch) officer portrayed tackling a thug. I was automatically thinking that in those circumstances that I would wade in to help. Then I realised that even though she was in trouble, I would likely end up in court on assault charges. Still, someone has to do it and I couldn't stand a watch as so many would today.

Quite and a lesson that never seems to be learned... Make unreasonable demands on our pockets and we will find better ways to resist them.
