Listening to the radio tonight and there was a program about AI

The owner from Mumsnet was on there and apparently the Mumsnet site was being scraped by 1 of the AI companies for training purposes

Mumsnet we're less than happy as it was done without consent, they tried to engage with the AI company to see if they could monetise or stop it and basically were told, no thanks, we'll carry on helping ourselves

I asked the Deepseek AI a question about a Brierley ZB50 drill grinder (to see if it knew anything about it all) and it used this forum as one of its sources for the answer.....

It's all the rage, but I haven't seen any evidence of its existence yet. It is just algorithms using mined data. AlgorIthms

"Training algorithms" is a thing, but it means acquiring data to set precedents - something for an algorithm to apply in the future in similar circumstances.

Sounds like they need some algorithms as well.

People have been debating what "intelligence" is for decades. Some people think help desk bots are real people.

At the moment, AI is about money. Eventually, it may be about intelligence.

The whole internet is being scraped by super computers to pick up turns of phrase , link ideas that might be workable or un workable any article that tends to have a big following & current trends ( currently where AI & MSN fail ) as it often produces fals news at the lowere levels . Even so called high grade peer reviewed scientific papers suffer as Rubbish In = Rubbish Out ...... RI-RO
20 yrs ago my lass working from home in security & hidden from public view was doing manual input in prep typing up conversations and typing about articles in magazines newspaper for the early versions of Alexa and Siri . That all change with automatic on scree recognition and remote sampling of conversations ........the begining of the current AI scene .
When I had the fishing gear sales site just after I joined the site I discovered early on that the life of a product I was selling was soon swamped due to massively low Chinese prices that I couldn't even buy in bulk from China .. I get two weks sales if I was lucky then I was undercut in most sales .
AI was being used to follow my site even back then & WSF too .

It's about applying what happened on previous occasions. Advanced algorithms.

Any concept sufficiently advanced is indistinguishable from magic, or AI.

There is not currently a way to differentiate between web crawlers that are indexing sites for search purposes, vs crawlers that are training Al models.

In general, there is no difference. For example, Google indexes sites - and used the data in its various data manipulation algorithms.

The data was harvested without charge but the service it provides is not free.

I think I might have had a rare light bulb moment reading this thread--here goes.

The types of AI being bandied about right now are simply glorified Google searches and data gathering.

True AI will only come about when quantum PCs are behind it and running the show.

There was an ad on the radio by Samsung and the fact their newest phone uses AI ...
Have they spent millions developing AI for their phone, or is it using updated software that they are calling AI because it's the latest buzzword???

But on a purely Physical level the table was released from the van,

It's quite common unfortunately. I work in web development and have had multiple clients complain about their sites running slowly, and when reviewing server logs it has been an AI crawler (not the usual search engine crawlers) essentially DDoS'ing the site. Those that i've dealt with so far use a custom user-agent, so it's easy to rate limit their requests or block them altogether.
