Kitchen Cabinet Doors...Paint Advise, please???

I foolish said maybe we could replace the cabinet doors.......

It appears that out of the 7 different doors sizes we have in our kitchen, only 2 sizes seem to be currently available via the normal DIY high street chains, which means replacing perfectly good base units...ie a new complete kitchen....

The other half in her wisdom has suggested we strip/plaint the doors we have already.....

I'm thinking that, I could cut new doors out of MDF, router a shape on the door edge and paint the door with a high gloss finish possibly, and fit new handles and hinges?

My problem is finding a tough high gloss paint or do I paint and then l use lacquer, I've only spray twice and that was years ago.

Any advise/pointers/type of paint/lacquer or web sites would be invaluable, please.

How about vinyl wrapping them?
I've just moved into a new flat and the kitchen cupboards looked a bit second-hand, but money is tight at the moment to replace them.
I toyed with the idea of painting them, but watched a load of videos on Youtube showing vinyl wrapping and did that.
I am really pleased with the results, it was really easy to do.
My brother who visited thought they were new cupboards!

Valspar paint is a possibility.

Vinyl wrap, I've seen cars that have been diy'd wrapped, I'm not impressed, plus we have a dog that sometimes jumps up to look on the work surface and could scratch/tear the wrap...

My mum painted her plain melamine ? cupboard doors with Dulux Satinwood back in the early eighties. They still look OK.

What about sticky back vinyl, like what is used for vehicle signage etc ? MDF will need to be properly sealed first though.

There are lots of smaller non high street business that do any size doors. Not too expensive if you stay fairly plain. Because when the painting is done, itll be just not quite right!

A friend did just that because he wanted a change of colours. He did the job himself and it looked good, cleaned scrupulously and denibbed of any raised bits due to dings.

i prefer proper wood as you can do much more with it than mdf

I've just not long finished making some doors for the kitchen units in the utility room. I took a punt on dulux multi surface paint from b and q. Pretty happy with results. I just brush painted them.

Farrow & Ball paint seemed to go on OK, when I did this, a few years ago.

@winchman did kitchen doors recently as I recall.

I've repeatedly painted our kitchen with farrow and ball, although I preferred valspar from B&Q - colour didn't match according to SWMBO!

She picks them I just stick them on the wall and generally do what I'm told. Pretty impressed with the way the paint laid down with just using a brush.

She is a paint snob then ! My ex bosses wife was just the same. I find that Farrell and Ball stuff is OK for heritage type stuff, but marks easily and is not very durable

If they're a shaker style anyway, like the above picture, I think they look quite good brush painted, especially in an older property. That would be my choice if doors were in good nick otherwise.

If you do sand, prep and paint, it gives you the option of filling old handle holes and replacing them too. New handles can provide a surprisingly significant facelift on their own.

I did ours I used Zinsser BIN Primer and a crown top coat cost me about £120 to do 22 doors and one house door, Finish is very durable but I made an additional using to cover the dog beds it was brand new Melamine faced chipboard from Ikea this needed to be sanded before use as it has some kind of polish on it,

It was £1200 for new doors no handles supply only and a few weeks wait, Local bloke wanted £200+ to paint. Took me about 3 days as you are waiting for drying etc. We where all surprised how well it came out, I used a £10 Brush and microfibres rollers

Ours are similar, and have already been painted once by the previous owner, hence the wish to replace them with flat surfaces...........swmbo......
