This could have been bad!

Today my wife was doing stuff in the kitchen, Jack Russel kept running through and circling round her, eventually she followed the dog into the hallway, we have a row of window seats under the windows, on the seats are cushions, there was an acrid smell of burning in the hall which wasn’t immediately obvious where it was coming from.
My wife suspected coals from the metal container which sits on a stone floor in the entrance vestibule, wasn’t that then she noticed some smoke and found the culprit.
A snow globe sitting on the window sill was refracting the sunlight (sometimes we get sunlight in Scotland) onto a cushion which was smouldering away, I think the cover and cushion was made from fireproof material thankfully, it has left a burn mark on the woodwork the cushion was backed up to.
Moral of the story, be careful of glass things sitting on a window sill, thankfully she was at home.

We Had that happen about 10 years ago the burn on the sill looked like a cigarette burn, no cushion

No it was a snow globe filled with water. Oval shaped, strange it should act as a magnifying glass.

Oh well there you go, it’s obviously not a one off then, good advice there then, I’m sure I was not the only one from all on here who had a glass ornament on a window sill, maybe time to move them, we’ve just re-located about 4 things, thanks for posting that.

We Have a scorch mark in our camper due to a magnifying make up mirror. (Not mine ) I wouldn’t have thought it would do it. Wife takes care now.

We also had a near miss in the mid-90's with a shaving mirror, only noticed when I couldn't remove what I initially thought was mould from the bathroom UPVC window frame - cos it was a scorch/burn mark about 4 inches long...

Yes the dreaded magnifying mirrors and glassware. My partner once smelt burning at our place, she went upstairs and found a little blaze starting up in a basket on a cabinet in her bathroom, it was a makeup mirror that started the fire on best of all, a bag of cotton balls. The most notable thing about the incident was that the velux window allowing the sunshine in is mostly north west facing, theres not a lot of strong sun there. Lucky anyway, no harm done for you.

Yet again the dog saves the day! Awesome creatures better than most humans.
I hated small yappy dogs until my wife got 2 rescue Jack Russells. Both lived to 15.5 years - miss them like hell. Would stand up to a lion. Loved attacking the petrol lawnmower.
