Flipping power cuts wrecked freezer

Yet again a freezer full of food lost
Freezer making a clicking noise won't power up. Only 4 years old.
Run capacitors perhaps or more serious?
I suspect power dropping to 120v didn't help and kept tripping on and off until my brother got up and knocked off the sockets.

Our Samsung knocked off all the settings after a cut, it has a fridge setting for the freezer for some stupid german reason.

No it is a very basic freezer with no electronic controls.

theres a thermal cutout for the motor. turning the thing on and off a few times and it cuts out and wont auto reset for 5 minutes just hums obviously its done it a few times and overheated the motor .a low voltage and cut has trashed the motor

Has it got warm enough for long enough for the food to be ruined? Why can't you cook any uncooked food and freeze that?

Not enough power to spin but enough to cook the stationary windings, is my guess.

Had this a few times now - in a power cut first thing we do is knock off all the main switches, and power up one incandescent light to keep an eye it.
Often you can see it pulsing or very dimly lit and if you stick a meter on you can see 50-100v, can wreak absolute havoc with electronics and appliances.

With the way the grid is going I think surge protection and PEN fault detection is going to be pretty much a necessity on every installation.

If the voltage dips, it tries to maintain it and cuts off if it drops too low. It then waits for 30s-3min after the supply resumes to ensure it is stable before re-powering the appliance.

It is the brown outs and rapid off/on that kills refridgeration equipment.

They are not so easy to find over here though.

A click followed by a hum when you turn it on. Another click and no hum when you turn it off again.

could try giving the motor a bit of a bat with a hammer or wood in case its stuck when you turn it on . hardly likely but worth a try

In work we're having trouble with water turbines taking out the over current trips. This is since the DNOs stipulated longer G59 trip times, essentially to prevent the domino effect of embedded generators taking the grid down (less "big" generators, more renewable generators, good in theory but essentially a less stable grid). So now our turbines "stay in" to hopefully ride through a brown out. Except it doesn't work due to the turbine having less load to run against, causing it to speed up ever so slightly. The result is it becomes out of synch with the grid - hence the over current.
So the best laid plans etc causes us more grief than a simple, self resetting G59 trip of the past...

Check the thyristor in the starter switch if the compressor has one.

My old fan oven was like that. Had to flick start the fan. Was like it for years

I didn't realise until fairly recently that big 3 phase rotating machines also had a flywheel effect on the grid. Inverter controls blocking that now as well.

East Sussex, between 6.20am and dinner time we had 32 power cuts, all mainly for a few seconds each, nothing harmed this time, last time (few weeks back) one of the phases found neutral and blew every single workshop led strip light.

I didn't realise until fairly recently that big 3 phase rotating machines also had a flywheel effect on the grid.

I think there is some connection between that and the use of a slave motor in a rotary phase converter.

There are powerline monitors you can buy, will watch for several problems, can be set to disconnect
the whole incoming power if needed.
