Mrs C and I were a bit bored. Lets get the bedroom redecorated,. paper off and get plasterer in. Oh lets get rid of the some of the overkill cupboards while we are at it. Bedroom has a million cubic feet pf cupboard space.This the estate agents photo

Hmmm tasteful first job was remove the hideous trim off the cupboards
then the bullet proof wallpaper and a million coats of emulsion

not looking so good. Plasterer came to visit and went out laughing saying 'all off'Out with the big guns luckily I fetched my Trend helmet from work, a dustopalypse. Horrendous

Ten minutes later

The lovely polystyrene tiles came off cleanly a miracle
Then the ceiling fell in. Time for the professionals. Absolutely disgusting
good guys, they taped the door shut and cling filmed the stairs

such a terrible mess I figured the ceiling of the stairwell is knackered so do them both. Ive heard legends about lath and plaster; its as bad as the legends.
Then the artex on the one wall looked a bit iffy, it was holding the wall up. Fell off in one piece.
the boys even put a temporary ceiling over the stairs trapping themselves in while pulling it al down

a structural material from the late 80's

All destruction done, next is board over the really bad bits then skim the whole stairwell.

the spare bedroom is never ever going to be touched, it can keep it's lovely polystyrene tiles and bullet proof wallpaper

An investment though and luckily I have funds for the job.
When this over I start on the floor.

Interestingly on my Facebook there is a pattern of this type of behaviour at this time of year going back about five years.

what was painful was after stripping the wallpaper of the first wall I had to get the plaster off., The 2nd wall was fine on no 3 I left the paper on and it was a twenty minute job to get the whole lot off and hardly any dust just slabs of wall to deal with.

When ours started to pop off the wall in our first house I just put a scraper behind it and pulled all that was loose off.

Must admit, glad it was you rather than me. At least, hopefully, that's the "DIRTY" stage finished - you're not going to be chasing the walls for electrics are you........

I did a tiny bit of that for one switch.
On the stairs I'm even leaving the trunking to one switch. I dont want a ton of plaster and artex on the floor

i do chases to switches and sockets and boxes using the multitool on solid walls that have backing plaster and topcoat . just use the cheap sh,it quid each wood blades . they last long enough to do the chase neatly with no breakout and then just chuck them

I've two downstairs rooms in an 1865 2 up 2 down terrace to do. The rear room is polystyrene tiles over lathe and plaster. Front room is just lath and plaster but all cracked. Rooms are maybe 12'x12'. I was debating lifting the upstairs floorboards and "knocking" the downstairs ceiling down from above.

Can I ask what mask you used. I need to bite the bullet and get on with it.

I would think that about now your plaster bunny gets a dose of the flu and can't come back as he is already behind with 2 other jobs.

I used a Trend Airshield pricey but amazing performance. See photo.
No crunchy snot or dust addled wheezing.

Absolutely disgusting.
This was just the plaster
I called the big boys in for the lath and plaster
Ten times disgustinger.
God knows what's in it, black sticky tarry dust.
I felt ashamed at letting them do it.
They looked like victorian coal miners.

just use a 2 and a half pound hammer and bat some plaster off the lats then use a crowbar or a small spade and rive it all off

We bought our current house back in 1999. Victorian era so lath and black mortar everywhere. Took a week off work once I had the keys and hacked off nearly all the walls and pulled down all the ceilings before we moved in. Just left 1 bedroom to live in plus the 'lean to' at the back to do another day and we moved in, bare walls, no running hot water, no central heating or heating of any sort and the rebuild began. Oh, and wifey was 6 months pregnant, must have been mad

I've found some proper archeology on renovations, strangest being a sealed up room that was clearly a child's bedroom in the 60s. Untouched and the door (attic room) boarded over. Complete with clothes, furniture and toys

Same happened in our 1930 house...ended with every wall, floor, ceiling being stripped and redone.

Ceilings were by far the worst job...I even hoovered from above but still went everywhere!

If you can spare the space I can recommend insulated plasterboard on exterior walls...makes a big difference.

I went with insulated boards, walls and ceilings to prevent cold bridging on the joists in the dormer roof. But had to put the roof on first!

I started converting a single socket to a double in the bedroom of my terraced house some years ago, the whole house ended up looking like that by the time the mission had creeped. It then took me nearly 5 years to put it all back right again.

Pulling down lathe and plaster ceilings was a once in a lifetime event for me, never again.

I've heard of this before, when a child has died, the parents can't face clearing out the room so the door is locked/sealed up and everything left as is. Not necessarily the case with yours but a possibility.
