Cistern water flowing to fill but going straight into pan

Excellent. Thanks all. The current flush valve has siamp stamped on it. Looking at pics I am pretty sure it's a 33a. I will get a washer and give it all a clean.

To be fair - it's been in there over 20 years and this is the first fault. Ive changed the inlet balve once and cleaned the seat a couple of times. So I am happy to replacethe flush valve like for like especially as it should avoid me dismantling the toilet.

Another thing to avoid is in-cistern cleaners. They cause diaphragm failure.

The high quality ones last and set up correctly give the same size flush as an old fashioned Syphon

The only issue is with cheap nasty ones

The old house had horrendous hard water, fitted fluid masters and never had an issue. Also made plenty of money fitting them for customers, initial thinking was they are easy to swap if they fail but never had to go back to one

I like Fluid Master stuff. Although I have only used their fill valves. Worth the extra money IMO.

It's a wonder this didn't leak some time ago. About 2 mins to fix.

Interesting. I have a very similar problem - the thing is running very slightly all the time, and I've been putting off fixing it for ages. I watched a video that suggests that stuff builds up really easily, and can be cleaned off really easily. The one time I had a go at removing the valve, it wouldn't twist off, I could see the part in the bottom of the cistern starting to turn. Since then I've watching another video that suggests I should push it down a bit before turning it, but haven't tried that. Looking at that, though, I probably should get a replacement seal in before I start the job. Good, another excuse to delay it.

my bog just overflowed it has a cheap krap ball valve in it there only 4 quid saw a substantial one in toolstation for 12 quid on offer .brass mains conection and quality plastic float in a sleeve with a twist knob on the top for altering the height flitted it in in 5 minutes

That's exactly what mine looked like when I replaced it. I put it off for a long time thinking it would be a major job, and like you I fixed it in a minute or two but only after spending a couple of hours taking the whole cistern off the pan
