How do I configure IMO Jaguar VXR VFD for 3-wire control?

I need to configure an IMO Jaguar VXR for 3-wire control. It should use a n/o run switch and a n/c stop switch.

I have read the manual several times over and am still unable to understand how to configure the VFD for 3-wire control although I think I am very close.

The snippet (below) seems useful. The timing diagram suggests edge triggering on the FWD pin (as would be associated with a switch press) with HLD providing the stop function.

Elsewhere in the manual, HLD is mentioned in the E-codes but I'm unsure how to make use of this.

I had a look on YouTube and there are at least two videos that you'd expect to be useful but they skip all the important detail about how to actually configure the VFD, or mention it will be coming in the next video, which never appears.

Your manual snippet is saying that terminals X1 to X5 can be used to do any of the functions listed from 0 to 24.

You have to pick a terminal, pick a function from the list and assign that function (plus its active state) to that terminal.

So if you want HLD on X1, you need to set E01 to 6 for active on (or 1006 for active off).

If you wanted X2 to reset the alarm, you set E02 to 8.

FWD and REV have their own inputs in the lower terminal block.

I tried a variant of that already. Maybe I made a mistake somewhere. I'll give it another go...

Ok, I've given it another go. I've configured X1 to HLD and I'm using FWD to run forward.

HLD now runs exactly like the name suggests, ie it holds the run command. However, it doesn't stop the motor from running if the FWD signal is high. This is best explained with a timing diagram, below.

I will experiment with other options for the e-stop.

Yes @Brad93 otherwise it would be keypad operation only.

The external signal from the run/stop switches is now working.

The problem is that HLD isn't really stop. It just releases the FWD command. See my previous tuning diagram for a better explanation.

My understanding is that E98 should be set to 98 ("run forward") and not 6 ("enable 3 wire operation", symbol = HLD).

@Agroshield I'm always willing to be proved wrong, but I tried your suggestion and.... It won't run.

To recap the current situation:

E98 (FWD terminal) = 98 (run forward)
E01 (terminal X1 function) = 6 (enable 3 wire operation, HLD)

FWD Terminal has a n/o run switch
X1 terminal has a n/c stop switch

Assuming the stop switch ("hold") is closed, press and release the run switch to start the motor. It continues to run until the stop switch is opened (hold released).

If the stop switch is open (pressed), it is still possible to run the motor, but it will only run while the run switch remains pressed as there is no "hold" or latching action. In other words, the run switch is similar to jog.

But...

If I use momentary contact switches for stop and run, the above operation would be acceptable. However, I want to use an e-stop type switch which when open ignores any run or jog command.

So...

Maybe I should use monetary stop (HLD) and run (FWD) switches in 3 wire configuration. I know this works. And then implement e-stop as a separate switch. This actually has some advantages (eg different braking, etc). However, despite a few attempts last night, I am unable to configure an "additional" stop switch without raising Er6 iirc.

E02 (terminal X2 function) = 30 (force to stop) raises Er6 but now I have re-read the error code description this is correct and expected!

E02 = 7 (coast to stop) works as it should. It prevents the motor from running if the run switch is pressed. Hooray!

E02 = 1007 is better as it allows me to use a n/c switch as a stop switch. Open = stop

No, I hadn't considered calling them. Actually, I didn't realise they are still in existence. This VFD is a second hand unit that I've had for some years and mostly been used for testing motors.
