Ingersoll Rand Type 30 - Oil Change Interval?

So after nearly a year stood, I have my big compressor ready for action, I don't really know a lot about these Type 30's apart from the fact that if serviced regularly they will happily outlive their owners.

About a year prior to me buying it, the previous owner did a full rebuild, and oil change.

Is it worth changing the oil again before I put it back in action, or doing any other checks?

If changing the oil, does anyone know what the specified oil (or modern equivalent) is?

Definitely change the oil, it should have been done after the rings bedded in post rebuild. I change the oil in mine annually, writing the date on the motor cover.

As for oil, the recommended one will likely be sae 30 which is OK if you live in a warm country or have a heated garage.
In cold weather the sae 30 gets thick and the pump can struggle to start up. I had this problem until I started using multi grade 15/40 car oil. Been using that for years and all my compressors have been fine since.

I think that's what he meant by it having a rebuild and an oil change that year...

But having sat for 10 months it could easily have acquired some moisture I don't want circulating.

That's useful to know, it will be living outside under cover for the next few months at least and I just happen to have some spare 15W40 sat about with no vehicle to go in, which is convenient.

again I only use 15w 40 engine oil in all my comps....
for me oil change date is always the first week of the new year....I sneak off new years day......hahaha...

Did it this morning followed by a test run...

Runs like a dream, you can barely hear it run, and after a 3-4 mins it will reach 10 Bar and cuts out bang on the money.

Some of the air tools really wake up if you run them at the full 10 bar too, alarmingly so.

Type 30s need an oil change every 25 years if you neglect this the service life drops to 100 years from the 300 years of the original design.
