Anyone recommend paint stripper ?

I need to paint strip part of my car (Fiat Doblo radiator crossmember) and then sandblast the rusty areas. I bought some paint stripper and it's about as much use as chocolate teaspoon - it did nothing ! I believe this is because the EU banned the active ingredient that used to work brilliantly. Seeing I also need to paint strip the many layers on my UMM Transcat (previous owner even painted over the large side decals ) I don't want to waste any more money on a product that won't touch automotive finishes.
Anyone recommend something that will work ?

You can probably still get glass fibre paint stripper from boat chandlers, it's based on caustic soda - also known as oven cleaner. Hint the bottled stuff in an orange box that you pour into a bag. Just don't ever get it on your skin.
The paint dissolves into soup. Worked on the shaker hood scoop of the 76 trans am.

You've probably not seen the damage a sandblaster can do to a car...........I've had two doors, front hood and an engine lid for a karmann ghia killed by an over enthusiastic idiot with a sandblaster (I wasn't the idiot!).

i wouldnt touch any car pannels or bonnets blasting. even using fine block paving sand at about 50 psi ruins them i went over the internal diagonal stiffeners on a ford bonnet to clean them up . when the bonnet was sprayed you could see a bloody big cross on it where it had let the stress out of the metal

Selection of abrasive, and application of said abrasive is key.
OP stated that he will be sandblasting the rusty area's anyway.

This is a detachable part. I'd buy new if cheap enough but it seems they are around £100 so stuff that and back to cleaning the solid one I've got Sand blasting is not a nice job (I do it outside in back garden) so would prefer to just clean the rusty bits rather than the whole painted areas as well.

My thoughts are if I have to drag out the blaster, and get all covered with dirt, might as well do it once and done.
However, if you can chemical strip the paint first, yes, that might speed things up.
Although, I would want to a light blast over everything once the rust is gone to blend in the surface finish between the blasted
and chemical stripped.

starchem synstryp is probably the only stripper left that works. might be worth trying some clean n strip discs for rust/ paint removal rather than blasting

For a cross member, I'd just hit it with a wire wheel and a grinder to get the worst of it off, and then sandblast it to get into the awkward areas, rust putting, and to give it an all over uniform surface key for the primer.

jesus been getting it from autojumble 25 quid it takes your skin off even a pinprick of it

Looking for something that'll take the paint / varnish off but in no way affect the brass underneath:

None of the commercial paint strippers did **** all when I used them.

You can make your own with caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) mixed with water at 15-20% and then some corn starch or wallpaper paste to make it stick. Be warned it is nasty horrible stuff and you will be chemical burned if it gets on your skin or blinded if it gets in your eye, plus with thickener it will stick to you (ask me how I know). Belt and braces PPE. I assume this was what (and why) it was removed, but it works like nothing else.

Might do with the caustic but I don’t think it would be concentrated enough % of wise.

So a few trial patches:

The Oven Pride, sodium hydroxide seems the best. Softens the (whatever the finish is) then it comes of with some CiF and a very fine emery sponge thing.

Still dull underneath with lots of engrained lines. Reckon a polishing mop job with Autosol or something. I'm not sure if this finish is suitable yet to spray with photo etch resist?
