My secondary school (1965-1970) had about 450 pupils. There was one fat kid. He was still the same shape 60 years later.

I thought someone was being rather hedonistic about a delivery of Columbian marching powder when I saw the thread title..
Had a light dusting Tuesday night near King's Lynn but it was raining first thing in the morning so it soon disappeared....

Some ice in my neck of the woods this morning. Got out a pair of my winter boots to which I added a couple of stainless steel screws to the toe and heel areas. Worked very well last time I encountered black ice, but just need to think about about floor or carpet damage before walking inside.

Yesterday's is still on the ground but by God it's cold outside
. Just watched the weather forecast on the idiot box and they're talking about -5 tonight, might be time to disturb the spiders in the coal bunker and keep the fire in overnight.

Had a two and a bit mile walk to school, and had to be nearly dead to be able to skive off. Even had to wear short trousers until the fourth year, even when it was snowing.
The absolute last thing that anyone wanted was a lift to school, you would never hear the end of it.

I just hope we don't get a winter like 1963 (well I like a proper winter, like we used to have but I'm semi-retired), the softies of today just wouldn't survive , the schools and factories stayed open there were "NO SNOW DAYS".
We worked around the problems and like when on.
It could be tough at times, but it built character...

To young for 1963, but remember 1985-6 and cycling/walking to work through 2-3 feet of snow 5 miles away.
2010 was very cold, was renovating a house and living in a mobile home, we had to go stay with friends as the toilet froze solid, nothing like the sound of water hitting ice when you get up for a pee in the middle of the night.

It says something about GB News that:
• whilst literally everyone else in the media employs a real meteorologist, who actually understands the art and science of weather prediction,
• GB News employs a newspaper journalist with no real qualification or expertise other than once writing a story about a storm so sensationalist it crashed a website.
A mile? LUXURY!
I had to walk 2 miles to catch the unheated bus the rest of the way!
In the summer I would normally cycle the 16 miles as it was usually faster than the bus route, and my push bike didn't have a tendency to catch fire on hot days.
(I'm not even joking, the Diocese awarded the bus contract to the lowest bidder, who used knackered Leylands re-imported from hong-kong, after the HK govt. declared them obsolete, it was common to be late because the driver had to get out and make running repairs to the engine, and there were about 4 fires in the 7 years I was at secondary/6th form.)

You didn't go out with a shovel and pile snow up around the sides of the mobile home for insulation ?

Had panelled round the bottom and there was about a foot of snow all the way round.
The airfield 3 miles from us recorded -16c that night, dont think it got much above -8 for about 5 days

I was in his vinicinty 20 odd years ago, in what locals told me was a mild winter (they didn't build the ice castle at Mayville on Chataugua Lake that year) - it was still -20 in the daytime . . . My car used to be frozen to the ground over night - I soon learnt to kick the snow in the wheel arches out when I parked after work so it didn't freeze and prevent me putting any steering lock on to get out of the parking lot of my apartment the following morning!

Still the wind blows in, so some stack the snow up above the skirting top.
