MIG welding in a shed

Hi all. Is it possible with the right safety precautions to successfully weld inside a wooden shed. Or is the only precaution weld outside? Intention would be to just take the opportunity to practice on some 0.8mm material. Thanks

It's not ideal, but far preferable to welding outside. The slightest breeze blows the shield gas away.

I've had to do it before, the bike I was working on was in the wooden shed and the (metal) shed which is my usual workshop was too full of other unfinished projects
Keep an eye out for anything smouldering afterwards, and keep a bucket of water or an extinguisher handy.

just make sure theres not much dust or any cloth and flammable stuff near by that sparks can get to and smolder as above fire extinguisher or a bucket of water when finished look round after 20 mins just in case

If it’s MIG (or MMA?), the spatter has quite a spread. Put a mask on and have a watch of someone to give you an idea, you don’t tend to see it when you’re welding - anyway, don’t assume the risk is localised to the immediate area you’re welding is what I’m saying.

Ok, thanks for the replies. I was thinking a good sweep, welding on a metal table, and also a couple of cheap welding blankets around the sides and on floor would help. Also, it’s an older shed so I am happy to damp down the walls and floor before starting.

I always weld outside, just jam a few wind breaks up where needed , weather does curfew you some what though !

what sort of size of shed are we talking about here ?

can you add another section onto the wood shed that you have ?

as goes for protecting best advice i can give you is have a clean area no junk or stuff around what your welding

protect where needed its also an hr after welding before you leave the wood shed as well

8x6 shed Virtually empty as it is but I could empty it completely. It’s built on a solid concrete base so if need be I could remove the wooden floor and just leave sides and roof.

dont over think it just a bit of common sense and care needed .

Have been doing so for years,as said use a bit of savvy,any of the places i do work for i always finish welding 15-20 mins before knocking off,that time is spent doing fire watch

Be reat. Just damp it down and have a bucket of water to hand.
Don't over think it.

All I have is a shed, so no option of anything else. As others have said just keep it neat.
I started with half a council concrete slab on the table to weld on. Now I have a large metal plate that I got from a scrap yard.
Also got a couple of old metal bathroom cabinets for any oils or combustible stuff.

grinding and cutting will get you into trouble far quicker than welding , remember in the worst case and when in a rush , if your welding on a car and its starting to get that orange glow ,,,,, kick the earth off and keep the welders trigger pulled , the shield gas will put out the fire . not as good as a plant sprayer full of water but its already in your hand.

the wooden floor could be an issue but with protection and weld 2hrs before you should be fine

make sure its clean get a table to weld on or bench with the vise on it with pillar drill then work around that

Good on the floor, consider adding drywall (gypsum board) to the walls.
Or cement board which will stand more abuse.
Around here, some use roofing tin for the walls and ceiling.
