Intake pipes

Going to be making a intake up same as pictured as they’re only available from America and expensive it goes from the supercharger round the side of the engine to the front then a cone filter attached the question Ive got is should I go for stainless pipe and preformed bends to weld together to make it or aluminium pipe and preformed bends
Doing it in stainless is actually around £30 less but the question is what would be the better material for it

I’d say aluminium as its lighter, by a few ounces anyway.

You see them in plastic, in ally and stainless, so pays yer money, takes yer choice. You will have to purge though...

I don't know if you plan to copy the exact shape or make it with as few bends as possible, I would suggest the latter.

Yeah I’m going to replace the two 45s for a 90 as it won’t be able to run as close to the engine as that one could anyway as I’m going up t0 4” diameter tubing but the picured one is 3”

I might just go aluminium then i think it’s got better thermal conductivity as well doesn’t it so it won’t hold heat as long as stainless would

Just make a curbside collection of a hose off a Henry/Hoover.....add duct tape and your all set.....

Stainless steel is a popular option on the Australian Pajero groups I’m on so don’t think thermal conductivity comes into it.

No need to go outside scavenging, I'm sure the materials can be found indoors...

I assume that you’ll be running either an intercooler or charge cooler so heat soak isn’t quite such a problem as long as it doesn’t affect the intake air temperature sensor.

If heat soak is an issue then carbon fibre is good.

It’s got a internal air to water intercooler in the inlet manifold it’s basically just a copy of a name brand aftermarket intake for a jetski but in a bigger bore than the aftermarket one to allow slightly more performance photo to give you the gist I currently have a rear intake setup but due to the location there’s a high possibility of water ingestion if anything happens hence wanting to re do it to the one like the picture

If you are going to 100mm, then you could use plastic soil pipe, pushfit or solvent weld. This is what BiL has done with his turbo Renault lorry, works a treat.

Choice of colours too and cheap !

Was thinking about that but don’t think i could bring myself to it as it’ll just look a bit like a bodge I could use it for mock up though to save the risk of wasting the metal pipe

You will soon get used to it, and revel in the joy of the money saved

Pie cut welds always look a bodge to me, and then there is the problem of getting them smooth inside. Needs to have mandrel bends to look "proper"

That’s what I was going with I was buying pre made mandrel bends for the corners so would have just been welded onto the straight run ect

If you're worried about heat soak you could get it ceramic coated to insulate it

Id be using 316 dairy bends if its going anywhere near sea water!

I used solvent weld for intake on my z powered car just to get it running and down to the guy to make the proper pipes in stainless, if that was me I would be getting one piece of stainless bent to that shape.

No where round me that can do it
