My question didn't seem to fit elsewhere, so here it is.

I need to MIG weld in a narrow gap, and I believe that a torch shroud and tip are available for such things but I don't know what/which to get.

Pics below, but basically I need to put a weld on to stop the pin rotating in the web on these pressed up cranks. It's obviously possible as I have one that has been done previously, but the issue is access. The gap is roughly 22mm and the weld needs to go on to the side at the bottom. Any names/makes/pointers/links for what I need?

That looks like a tig job with a specific torch would do, you get very low profile torches for this exact application, getting in small areas. https://arc-zone.com/tig-torch-ck-812vhsf an example of what is available.

That looks like it'd be the thing. However, and excuse my ignorance, but what is a Binzel style torch and how does it relate to the set up I already have? i.e. is it compatible?

See if there is some one local to you that can lend you there MB15 (size) torch as what you have there looks to be about an MB36! (masive !!)

Does the purple colour indicate a Parweld torch? If so, look on their website to see what style torch they supply.

As above, like with TIG torches, there are various sizes of MIG torch. I think the torch number is roughly the maximum amps divided by ten (so an MB15 would be a 150A torch, the smallest).

Thanks, we're narrowing it down now.

Yes it's parweld, and appears to be a Binzel type called 'eco-grip' on their website but could also be their 'Pro' type. I can't see anything on it that indicates the size/capacity or model.

So it appears from what you posted on the first link in need to establish the size and then get the shield and tip to suit. They're not hugely expensive though so I could just get the most likely two sizes and go from there. Hopefully it'll be apparent which fits without destroying the packaging and then I can just return whichever I don't need.

It's a lot of faff for something that'd only be used a couple of times a year, but well worth it for those couple of times.

It is standard Binzel consumables, referenced to the torch they fit. You might be able to work out your torch size from looking at those. In particular, the thread on the tip (M6 or M8) would narrow it down and also looking at your shroud, it had a spring band on it, which MB15 and MB25 do not (the Parweld 240 and 360 do have the band).

No, it has to be fully assembled before welding.

More than likely, however as I have a decent MIG it wouldn't make much sense to buy a stick welder.

More than likely, however as I have a decent MIG it wouldn't make much sense to buy a stick welder.

I have a nice Oerlikon inverter if you want to try that.

Thanks, that's good of you. I'd rather get the MIG sorted to do it though, that way the kit I need will be on hand as and when.

The stuff I need isn't very dear, so it doesn't make sense to consider another machine type just for this. Plus it's been a very long time since I used a stick welder.

If you cut back a normal shroud and use some false screening to keep the gas in the right place, would you get it?

I did consider setting up a box to flood with gas and weld without the shield. Again though, it seemed like a lot more hassle than spending a few quid on a new shield and tip designed for the job.

I've squashed the end of a nozzle to get in tight gaps many a time.
