Estate fencing

Good evening everyone. I'm just putting together a job involving estate fencing. I've done plenty of repairs to estate fencing and replaced a couple of bays here and there. However this time I have been asked to price up 180 meters run. My question is roughly how long would you guys and girls say it takes to install. 40mm x 10mm posts at 2000mm long to allow 1200mm out of the ground. 20mm round top bar and 4 rails at 25mm x 8mm flat. I'll be welding on site and painting too

I know this might sound like a stupid question, since this is a welding forum, but what is the proposed fencing made from? There have been several threads regarding wooden and concrete fencing, hence the question.

Depends on the posts. Straight typeor the ones with feet.
Straight posts can be dug in by hand relatively quickly.
The ones with feet really needs a digger on site as it would be a a fair size hole.

These are standard straight posts and I've already welded thrust plates to each posts. The existing fence is around 80 years old and is fitted the same way although not welded.

Post rammer with adaptor makes light work of it.

I'm going to hire one Hitch. I am going to allow 10 working days to put in the post's and thread the bars in and weld then paint. Do you think that sounds about right

Exactly, that's why I thought I'd join this forum to get some help. For the record hitch I'm mid 40s time served welder fabricator and I mainly work in the agricultural and forestry sector and a fair bit of decorative garden metal work full time self-employed. The estate fencing is something that I've only ever done repairs and replaced short section 3 bays or so. The ground is easy to get normal wood posts in. No power, access is excellent. Tele handler on site for which I have a ticket for. Painting will be by brush.

I've done the materials and factored in rods and paint and consumables, fuel for the genset and a price to get the post's punched and cut to 2000mm. The trouble with repairing sections and very short runs is that I never really take any notice. I quote and remove and repair or replace. This is a fresh run.

Take your time getting the posts bang on line and height….some near me dont recently….it looks bloody awful

I'm a bit anal about getting things looking right. Big part of any job is preparation and its key to a good outcome. String line and pins to mark out the gentle sweeping curve of the driveway. I'll mark the post's at 1200mm

I'd work out a price based on experience. Go for a walk, crunch the numbers again and add on at least 30% to the higher of the two figures.
Then check again a day later.
This sort of thing never goes according to plan
Or if I could afford to I'd run a mile.
I do metal sculpture and the thought of long runs of railings terrifies me.
I love spotting where they have gone wrong

Thank you that is excellent advice to be honest. I'm more into getting out my metal craft tools and doing the decorative metal for gardens. Big rose arches and the such. Or welding and doing modifications to agricultural and marine kit

For example, yes I've done fencing and have my own wee knocker for the back of the compact tractor (because we had tight spaces to fence) but if it's out in the open like my parents farm their neighbour with the reels on the front of the tractor, a knocker that's 20x the weight of mine will blast it out in a few hours compared to the two days that it took us to do the same length. That's just a tractor based setup a neighbour has which is nothing compared to some of the dedicated fencing rigs you can get.

What is the fence holding back?
I put some up with sheep and cattle in the field.
I had to make the posts taller for cattle and keep the gaps on the rails small so sheep couldn't get through.
From what i remember every other post was concreted.

Sheep wear the paint off after a couple of years.

I think for estate fencing the installation is a huge part of the earning in the job!

As for stock fencing etc pay a young persons with the right kit, if its more than just a little bit!

If its curves, don't forget it'll be harder threading the bars through than if were a straight run so will take longer.

I would want to test ground conditions before pricing, with a couple of muckers and straight soft going you could probably do 200mts a day. If it’s boney old ground and undulating it could take weeks.
