Got a replacement starter today.

Old one has 2 x 10.5mm holes and is secured wtih 2xM10 Allen bolts. New one has 2 x 13.5mm holes - thats the way they come in high speed geared model apparently.

I guess a piece of 1/2" SS pipe and split the side with hack saw and compress a bit will make a bushing for me., 1/2" SS pipe is 1.5mm thick so should fill up the 1.5mm annulus I want to fill. Put back on my M10 bolts with some washers.

Anyone any better ideas, Im keeping the geared starter, they are much better than older style.

Anything else is over complicated or engineered. A simple sleeve centralises the bolt shank, job done.

Just ensure the bolt head (or underside surface) of your M10 has sufficient bearing contact.

I was thinking the same, a top hat washer would be ideal.

Why do you need the sleeve/bush at all?

The bolts should not have any function in locating the starter in position. Or if they do, it is a badly-engineered design. Is there not a flange or other machined surface that does the location job and sets the gear mesh distance between the starter and the flywheel?

Doing the bolts up to the correct torque will prevent that. Bolts act in tension, which increases the friction between the mating surfaces. That is what stops the shaking, not mechanical contact between the bolt shank and the hole through which it is poked.

As the hole is oversized, all you need to do is use thicker washers under the bolt head to channel the tensile force into the surface (standard washers would have to span the larger gap and could bend).

I am not saying do not do anything you are suggesting, but it is good to understand correctly how the mechanical system works.
