Other aspect is do the boatyard that hauled it out even allow outside contractors? Many yards dont allow them & if they do want a piece of the action anyway. Not worth getting involved with deals like that.

Thats very common not allowing outside folk working in their yards, but its a good excuse not todothe job and the other is my insurance for liability wouldn't cover me!

Well as of today, I'm on holiday for a fortnight. All good.

Some lass, friend of a friend, asked me to change the oil seals on a Volvo Penta sail drive, fairly easy job, now it has suddenly become that and engine out and change rubber skirt. But judging by her photos, it all looks inaccessible, I'm tempted to run away it's over an hour away, and I really don't fancy it. Or it'll be very expensive...

When you get a job you don't want to do, you can always put in a ridiculously high quote.

If they decline it, then you won't be disappointed and you can mentally tell yourself you didn't turn down the work - no "what-if" regrets.
If they accept it, at least you know you'll be minting it for the hassle factor which will take some of the sting out of it when your cursing the job.

Ford Halewood wanted some extra I/O boards fitting to some of their robots, ABB didn't want the job so quoted about 3X the going rate, Ford just said "OK, when can you do it?" muggins here spent 2 weekends up there fitting them for just 4 days time off in lieu while ABB made a tidy profit

The thing is, you KNOW it is going to be a can of worms, AND will take a lot longer than you estimate, AND be awkward and uncomfortable.

You also know, that she will be "unhappy" if you ask for more when the job takes longer or parts etc cost more, and you will be guilt tripped into losing out.

I understand the money will be handy, it always is, but it is actually worth the grief ? After all, you have not lost the £600 or whatever, as you never had it in the first place. You will be no worse off that you are now, and better off from the hassle it is going to obviously be.

Just tell her you are on holiday, and don't have time to do it for the time being, but if she would like to wait until February 2028, you will be happy to help.

...and the thought of hanging upside down in the bowels of a boat trying to reach some siezed bolt while parts of the engine are trying to puncture your liver doesn't appeal to me, either.

An hour away?! Most of my working life has been an hour away commute so dont see an issue with that.

You said in first post its an easy job except for engine out. Thats the sort of stuff your good at, no?

A days easy work, good money and for a friend, do it.
