Just been looking online, trying to get a rough idea of what prices are like. Is this an average'ish price for kiln dried oak?

Nearly all our burning stuff comes off our land but If we have to buy any its normally £100 for a heaped up builders bag sized load, not all oak but a nice mix of woods

1m3 bags from our local one are 130. Builders bags about 80 ish. Soft 1m3 £80. Builders bag 60 ish

Buying by the pallet gets you nice looking even sized logs. But scrappy looking ones in a builders bag, burn just the same.

Price doesn't sound ridiculous when it's including delivery and online ordering convenience.
I paid about £155 for that amount (kiln-dry, 8%< mixed hard)
But that was start of summer and collection from a sawmill. That's loose, they want 40 deposit on the crate.
Local log man is about 20% cheaper for a larger amount including delivery (dumped from a tipper) but they are nothing like as uniform and not dry or clean enough for me

I could buy logs cheaper from a local place, but it could be any wood & moisture level would be an unknown.

It is illegal to sell uncertified wood in the UK particulary that if it's moisture content is unknown in an effort to control emissions.

The "log man" near me just increased his minimum load size from a pick-up to a tipper to get around that.
Apparently the regulations only apply to delivery's below 2 cubic meters.

Seems the wrong way round as big users can carry on causing emissions but if granny wants a real fire for a few days at Xmas she has to pay more for it.

Moot point anyway as drying it in the first place just shifts the emissions somewhere else..

Not really worth stealing when its hard to give away fresh logs. My buddy has to pay to tip logs quite often.

I suggest if you have a burner and adequate space to let it dry, find a local arborist. When we know somone is taking it, we will normally saw it to sensible firewood sizes. If you split then let it season over summer, you have free wood for winter, particually if its ash, other species may take a bit longer. I dont burn myself but I'd likely pile it up around a fire pit to get fresh split stuff ready quicker.

Where do you get them Brian? First time I’m ever going to buy wood this year, after pitching the log store out to make temporary space due to extending the back I normally just wait for high winds and drive round with trailer and chainsaw

€56 for one stere of oak, chestnut, hornbeam and various fruitwoods, two years seasoned. Very little cheaper if I buy 20 stere at once. He and his wife help me stack it. My fifth firewood dealer in the last eight years, I hope this one lasts. It's a sweat every year when a supplier who you use once a year is to be called to check if he remembers you. The going rate per stacked cube has not moved much in twelve years, maybe from €48 to €60, people in the town who run their fires for friends and dinners and so on pay a fair bit more, probably €90 plus, I am paying what people might call the countryside rate.

Price for logs have gone up a lot over the past 2 years, I’ve found the cheapest is to look on gumtree and get them from a tree surgeon, probably best to do that in spring though so you’ve got the summer (that’s a joke) to season them if you actually get some sun and dry weather!
Pallets are great, you get them for nowt but you need a trailer and the spare time to be bothered to covert them to logs, I use a nail gun for that.

This is how i store and dry my logs if i have a glut. With limited space you have to think like they do in Hong Kong and go vertical

It’s like any attempt at implementing legislation, lots of consultations, paperwork and a quango thrown in as a good measure with little to no impact other than a financial one. The kiln dried log industry is little short of a joke, thousands of tons of useful logwood albeit green is burned in kilns to make a product that would be equally useable in time without it. The jerks in shirts haven’t got a clue.

I store my split logs in empty ibc frames. You get to buy or use scrappy logs, the air can get in them to season them in summer, you can buy sewn black covers if you want them to look posh and not use tarp, you can stack them fairly easily and you can still move the ibc with mechanical means.

My Cousin has always provided mine Ali from his log business in Birkenhead docks but he has just cleared his yard now as he sees log burners getting phased out across wirral due to the loony lefties and clean air. Mine is staying Go on Ebay mate and there are loads of places doing logs up and around Wrexham area. The problem with going high winds clearing is what you get this winter you cant burn till next winter, so you need to be a season ahead for free wood and most house holders have cottoned on to the firewood game and charge you now to clear there driveways

As Kram says, an ad on Arbtalk may well work. Between myself and my brothers we've had a few tonnes all for free. One brother lives in a semi rural location and gets most of his logs this way. Other brother lives in the town, posted an ad and forgot about it. Two years later he got a call asking if he wanted logs and a tipper lorry load turned up with a further tipper load a few days later. Driver wouldn't even take a drink as the favour works both ways. You may need to be able to take full tipper loads of uncut logs just dumped on your drive.
