Not familiar with British hunting gear, but it looks like it might be the end coupling of a type of small game carrier; perhaps to hang bird's by the neck ?

It’s a muzzle for a ferret. Stops them biting and killing rabbits whilst they are working in the warrens. Three sizes in the picture They are old, no longer available. I was given them when I was just starting out by an old retired keeper. For anyone not knowing what a ferret is, this is one. When I was doing a lot of rabbit work, I had over twenty of them. Fantastic animals, fun loving

Pal had a Hob ferret called William, it was huge. Be over 2 foot long and took both hands to get round his shoulders. Big friendly one, loved playing about

Called him Angus Ogg.He managed to kill a rabbit one time, ate it, fell asleep and never came back out, tried a trap for a few weeks but never got him. A year or so later a friend found him, his back legs were wasted away with tics sucking the blood from the muscles. Had him for a while after that but just as a pet as he just had to haul himself along.
I much preferred the albinos, smaller and more agile. My best one would kill rabbits and then haul them out

William was a worker, he’d work all day. Just got a drink of milk after a couple of hours and back at it. I think because he was so big he couldn’t move quite as quickly as the rabbits and they got a chance to bolt. I had Jock, biggish albino. He often laid up when in the warrens but I enjoyed the locating and digging down, except when we were on a property where adders were present. Sticking your hand down a hole and then touching something that wasn’t rabbit or ferret like wasn’t nice. Thankfully they were very docile.
