Identifying an angle grinder

That's a Black & Decker 7" angle grinder. I had one until this year bought it off a member here. They are rugged but very heavy and they use a larger thread than modern 7" and 9" grinders which I think are 14mm. These are probably 5/8" thread. The discs fit the same but don't lose that nut.

Mine came with a particularly vicious wood carving attachment. I may still have that bit somewhere but it will be a while before I find it.

My first angle grinder was/is a B&D 7 inch (which I still have and use every so often) is has a metal gearbox/plastic motor housing, I purchased it from Southern Discount Store in Ilford when I was 17 years old, I'm now 68.

My first angle grinder (I still have it) has been a very pretty B&D industrial 4½" , to be precise it's a SuperStar Professional P54-16 but it's a B&D just like the Elu and DeWalt, same grinder different colours .
One of the things I loved about this little grinder is the detachable power cord.
I believe every single corded power tool should have one

There were a few american makers of all metal body grinders & drills.
Black & decker, Van Norman, Wen, Power Kraft, etc.
I think some of the big names in air tools also made electric tools, chicago pneumatic, sioux, etc.

The brush holder orientation is very odd, and may help in identifying.

My favourite American brand from that era is Thor. They made air tools as well as electric. E.g. this model 44 drill:

I've seen loads of them, and found few sold really cheap but unfortunately I'm not able to run them yet , even 1940's Italian made tools, I can't run them.
I only have 230V and older stuff is 125V or 165V or even 180V .
I buy old stuff just for restoring them and making YouTube videos.
I do prefer to buy 220V tools so I can use them too if needed

Regarding the detachable cord, I bought the elu version of that grinder from an elu rep at a trade show. The grinder was designed for the oil industry, if the grinder stopped working it was scrapped and a new one connected up to the old cord. Not having to store new cords saved valuable space in the oil rigs store.

I knew this story and I can't understand why they don't produce them anymore.
Milwaukee used to produce them as well.
I have a drill and a SDS Max drill with the detachable cord .
Festool still makes them and parkside recently launched a performance line with this feature.
But I can't really justify buying a hobbyist range angle grinder or drill after having something like 10 professional angle grinders and 5 or 6 very expensive drills

One of my mates worked for a small tools hire firm, he had a MT3 full metal cased electric hand drill (I think it was about 350 rpm?), the design was like an overgrown Wolf Gut Buster Drill, the long screw-in tube handle was about 3ft long and the switch handle had a threaded socket on the bottom in which another shorter handle was screwed in.

He acquired it, when the hire firm decided to skip it, it had been only out on hire a few times and was like new, the reason he acquired it was someone had hired it and had broken both arms while trying to use it.....apparently the drill bit grabbed and spun the drill including the operator........

Fein Dsk 672-2 (672-4 in the image) MK3 morse taper , I don't remember the rpms but I think is something like 180rpm in first gear .
They made a drill similar to the one you described , with a lever switch and 3/4" pipe threaded handles.
You might see one occasionally they are at least 70 or even 80 years old right now .
Thing amazes me the most is that they had no power at all but they have an hudge amount of torque.
400W or something, less than 1HP but they spun drills up to 30 or 40mm .
Mines does 26mm on steel 32mm on alu, 56mm on wood.
And those numbers reference to twist drills .
They are normally used for line boring or on a magnetic base

Father in law had a big Wolf gutbuster that i used a few times, The thing was frankly dangerous as it had so much torque, i had a smaller Wolf & also Dads two alloy cased Dessouter drills that he had had for years, he got them in the mid 50's & they were still working up until he passed away about ten years ago.
Trouble with all these old metal cased tools is internal wiring, They used rubber covered wire which perishes & goes hard, then it breaks up & you get bare 240 volt wires..... My last one was a B&D 1/2hp circular saw & i scrapped it about ten years back after having a look at the wiring.

Wires insulation can be restored, it's a shame to throw those pieces of history away without even trying to save them.

I've found one on eBay a Fein 2000's Dsk with the original Fein stand, I can't justify 300 euro for one of those.
I'd prefer to use them for a real drill press or bench drill
