Trailer mover/Dolly

Morning all

As i have now invested in a small single motorbike trailer to drag my bike around on family trips away and i have nowhere to store it other in the back garden (Much to Mrs Maddog's delight) AND To add insult to injury she has to help me get it there.. It weighs about 60 Kg but is particularly unruly to move through the single gate on its side - Last time we used a skateboard.

Ive got a set of castors off the Jungle site to knock up some sort of dolly, however i wondered if you more ingenious fellows could come up with a more elegant solution that my piece of ply with 4 castors on it that we can place one wheel on (trailer on its side) to wheel through the gate?

have a look at the supermarket breadtray base unit thingies,

or just nail 4 castors to a board, hell you could even weld it as its a welding forum,

or left field thought, can you fit castors to the side of the trailer permanently??

i would say a panel board trolley like in wickes / b&q with 4 wheels that spin

a few things you can do with it you can move the trailer with ease
you can also fasten a lift system so it helps to turn the trailer onto its side with a ratchet line

That's not that daft an idea!

Pic might help as there are different designs of motorbike trailer I can think off which need different solutions

you would need a cart with the wheel area cut out so the cart can be positioned right up to the trailer side

the cart has a tilt mechanism either side of the wheel arch so when connected to this will tilt and spin the trailer sideways onto the cart

I vote for permanently attaching castors to one side.

But I was intrigued by this solution. Probably only useful for a 'camping' trailer as I'm not sure I'd want to put 750kg of sand in there:

I've the same trailer (twin bike version) taking up a load of space in my garage. I've been thinking how nice it would be if it could be stored safely on its side or up ended. I'll be watching this thread with interest!

I have a collapsible bike trailer bought as a kit from Eb@y (just add hubs & mudguards then paint), it's designed to carry a large sportsbike and correctly stamped (300Kg max?), easy to strip into 7 pieces that are are currently hung neatly on the garage wall. It will also pack into the boot of a small hatchback.

It might be worth buying something like the one I have and selling the one you've got ?

Kit: 2 piece U-section spine, trailer hitch, axle, 2 hubs, loading ramp.

That is all I use in the same situation. I think my trailer is a Dave Cooper one and it has steel mudgurds rigidly mounted to the frame. I just rest the mudguard on the trolley and use a ratchet strap over it for stability.

In your case, you can't use the mudguard as it is plastic, so cut a circle out of plywood that the tyre rests on. Add another smaller circle on top of that so that the bead drops over it and that will make sure the trailer is spigoted to the trolley. Strap over the top and away you go. You might have to think of some clever way to stop the wheel rotating on its axle.

Mildly off-topic, but I've always been concerned about towing a single axle trailer with a bike of mine on board - what happens when you get a puncture or blowout (see that scene in 'The world's fastest Indian')

No different to getting a blow out with a caravan, just have to try and keep it under control, and change the wheel (assuming you have a spare). Be worse if you got a blow out when riding the bike itself.

I had a blow out onn a single axle caravan a long time ago. Did it scare me? Nope, hardly knew it had happened. All I was aware of was a strange rumbling noise appearing. Nothing obvious going on with the car so checked what I could see in the mirrors and the 'van appeared a bt low on one side. Fortunately had a spare so pulled over, changed it and carried on. Absolutely no dramas. Though to be fair, I was only doing about 55 - 60mph!
