Fake Mitutoyo

you're better up buying a quality known make at the cheaper end of the spectrum than buying knockoffs or possible fakes.

Insize are really really good, they do a heavy duty zinc caliper for about £60 it has lasted my dad three years which is saying something!

Even the £30 moore and wright ones are useable.

In my opinion the standard mitutoyo digital calipers aren't that much above the rest of the field.
It's the coolant proof ones which are a league above.

That's the one. I've a mate who uses & rates them, just couldn't get brain into gear & bring the brand to mind.

200mm is a unusual size, 150mm (measuring capability) is pretty normal,
I've got quite a few in 150mm, various makes, mitutoyo, spi, m&w, etc
Can let you know what's there if you like?

At least you can buy them new from an authorised dealer if you are worried about fakes. Or stretch the budget a bit and you can probably get a new mitutyo for £100..

Your quite right, just had a look, it's 150mm & I'm an idiot.
I'm not wedded to them but Mitutoyo are the pair I reach for.

I have a pair of SPI calipers as well as a couple of the coolant proof Mitutoyo ones, the SPI one works OK but it eats batteries. My SPI digital micrometer is the same, it's quite rare that I need to use it, so I take the battery out in between. Battery life of the used daily Mitutoyo stuff by comparison is really excellent

I've got a pair of 1000mm insize calipers, Biggest bar I have got to check with is 500mm but they are accurate and repeatable on that.

Big stuff was dire. Bore mikes around 125mm were laughable. I could consistently get more accurate readings with a telescopic gauge and a micrometer

Maybe look for Snap-on 2nd had set?.

My Snap-on are Mitutoyo digital.

May be a step too far for the Chinese to knock off Snap-on AND Mitutoyo in one hit??.

Thanks all for the help, problem solved I hope; friend of a friend's toolmaker father's selling up & I think I've got dibs on his metrology stuff. 2nd hand Mitutoyo from a trusted source fingers crossed.

I’ve got a Dasqua one, decent enough quality for me and comes in a heavy duty plastic/foam case, from RDG tools, around £35/£40 if I remember rightly.

I've got a Dasqua DTI - good enough for warranty measurements on brake disc runout and passed it's six-monthly calibration check for the last three years, cost about £40

Does anyone know if there are telltales to distinguish fake from pukka?
A cpl of years ago I was told that there were fake digital Mitutoyo calipers around. A few yrs previously I'd bought my current set secondhand, apparently they're the real deal & they've been great but now they're getting v. tatty & I'm looking to find replacements. Not ideal that I'm looking 2nd hand but funds won't allow for new.

Alternatively, if anyone has recommendations for a dependable brand at about £60 I'll have a look at those.

I have a fake mitutoyo 0-50mm mic, the only tell is that the batteries die quickly because the chinese stuff doesnt sleep properly, it just blanks the display and keeps the circuits proper on standby. I use it on the lathe and mill and paid the fake price, so no big problem.
I have a genuine set of really old mitutoyo digital calipers with the old style display and colour scheme long before the current branding that I bought secondhand, and on that the batteries last a year or so, but they don't auto power down so you have to remember to switch them off. Even if you forget occasionally the batteries last months anyway. They are my go to when I want to hit repeatable measurements and I dont leave them in the chip tray while turning or get them covered in coolant.

The older set from a curated source sounds like the best option for you.
