if you have space use a plastic cold water tank..thats whats on my mill with mesh screen to filter returning coolant

tanks on a colchester lathe... built in

considered cutting it out..but don't really want to, still might tho, cos applying the resin means having my head in the door.... about 2" away from the stuff....& cant see any other way of making sure teh matt and the resin get everywhere....

If you cleaned it well beforehand, would a little of that liquid-metal type putty not do the job? I guess this is in the area directly below the pump, on the base of the tank where cavitation (or just the currents?) always exacerbates wear?

cant actually see it... i think it is in one of the seams/folds on the front certainlt not where I would expect it.

tank sealer might work... I would worry about adhesion tho given the pita access, was thinking of lining the whole thing & basically making a fibreglass liner in situ.....??

on a slightly different subject:-

any thoughts on using a light oil such as WD40 as a coolant over teh winter?
concerned about water diluted stuff freezing in the pump etc....

I used a neat oil coolant, I scrounged it from a local place with cam auto lathes. I was only brushing it on on the lathe, the entire lathe was oily, I got pretty slick to;-) Had it pumped on the saw, but was sure I got through blades faster, than when I used water based coolant.

Funny you should say that, I use some soluble oil that I blagged from an aerospace client of mine (so I know it's kosher stuff) but the lathe and mills get as sticky as hell with it, and that's diluted! I'd forgotten how clean my Boxford actually is until a few days ago when I paraffin'ed the beast and now I don't come away claggier than a Middlesbrough teenager after an evening in the back seat of a Saxo...
