Could just be down to the evolution of man going back to Neanderthal times. Thick people over breed and produce even thicker kids, who then have kids while they are still kids and can't bring them up any sense.

I don't read the daily mail by the way. Anything in newspapers and on tv is always over exaggerated.

A load of raft guides (on our way to the French Alps for an assessment) got stopped by british customs at Dover as there was an international football tournament in Germany that week...

'Are you carrying guns, knives or hand grenades?'

Answer 'Yes, knives and lots of 'em, we've got at least one each'

Much head scratching and discussion amongst the customs people as they considered pulling two minibuses and two trailers apart to find the illicit items

They let us go.

In the immortal words of our assessor....

'If you haven't got a knife, what are you doing with a rope, if you haven't got a rope what are you doing on a river'

Knives are tools of our trade, I know a few bloody good sixteen year old raft guides who can't legally walk to work

Going through customs on our way to Poland last year to do some Shooting, one of the lads (ex-SAS) was stopped because he had a knife longer than 3" in his bag, the guy was going to arrest him. It didn't bother the copper that it was in a bag along with a .300win mag and 100 rounds of ammo.

I have had a Swiss army knife for years it is part and parcel of me, I also have a Jack knife with one of those thingy's for getting stones out of horses hooves, but not many horses round here these days.

Sounds familiar... I was once told that the 5" knife on my webbing was an offensive weapon. Possibly not as offensive as the machine gun and 200 rounds I was carrying...

and yet, you weren't allowed to use said machine gun on the ******** tis a sad world we live in.

I carry a twin bladed SOG multi-tool every day at work, it's a tool of my trade. I'm in IT support! The amount of hassle that thing has saved me, or any of the other knives I carry, I'd be lost without them. In 40 years of being on this planet I've never stabbed anybody nor would I want to. Why am I a criminal if I'm simply walking down the street, bothering no-one?

I can remember years back, I was a mature (?!) student on a social work course, I was the bearded psycho biker on the course.

Girly student asks me nervously 'Why do you always carry a knife?' 'cos they can be useful sometimes' was the repy as I decorked the bottles of wine they had bought along to an end of term party with my swiss army thingy.

Re the thinguy for getting small boys out of horses hooves. has anybody ever used the 'multi purpose hook'? I cant see any uses for it at all.

The original "Thing for getting stones out of horses hooves" found on pocketknives was a marlinspike, used when splicing ropes and undoing knots &c.

A hoof pick is a hook actually used for getting stones out of horses hooves!

YES!!!
When I was under orders from senior management to put a spure socket in the front room it was handy to pull the excess cable through (that's about it though )

Going back to my childhood though, and spending my summer holidays with my Dads family in Brittany, I remember the look of horror on their faces when I announced that I didn't have a 'canif' (it was used all the time, even at the dinner table).
I was dragged into the nearest town the following day and presented with a No. 8 Opinel. I've carried a knife ever since albeit a swiss army job now, one for work, one for home. To me it's a handy tool, not a weapon.
Having had a knife confiscated at Heathrow many moons ago as it was 'a weapon' I did question that the two 12" screwdrivers I was allowed to keep obviously couldn't cause any harm then!

the hooked tool on most sak is for carrying heavy shopping bags to stop the handles cutting in to you hands/wrist. thats why it folds out to 90 deg

I've had exactly the same rant. Every year I help set up a medieval festival. Those of us of "a certain age" to a man have a good pocket knife. The youngsters are always asking for help with stuff, to be met with "well where's your bloody pocket knife then?" I always, but always have my 3" whitby thumblock knife in my left hand pocket. I'm right handed and couldn't ever use it in a fight even if I was so inclined (which I'm not!) Because I'd never find it in time under all the bunches of keys. It gets used for everything from stripping cable to slicing salami, and most often for opening those stupid heavy plastic packages that everything seems to be welded into these days. Rant over, as you were...

The pointy thing is specifically for getting boy scouts out of horse's hooves, the hook is for doing up lady's can can corsets. I always carry a single blade sheep hoof knife, no pointy end on the blade and a sub 3" non locking blade so legal and not threatening looking.

the only use i've ever been abel to think of for the hook thingy would be be as a torture inpliment.

a knife is a very usefull almost essential tool. my favoret knife is a vicouus looking thing but a bit illegal now

blade is about 5 " long ( was longer been sharpend meany meany meany times , the pointy end is screwdriver / prying thing, on the back of the blade is bottel opener,hookey thing wire stripping notches, saw blade. and can put stuff in the handel. spent meany years running round the coutryside with it.

now generaly have a multitool thing its more accseptable but i don't really like it.

Always used to have a knife by my side or in my pocket, mainly for shooting and generally being brought up in the country and have never seen a problem with carrying one. People have been cutting each other for years but its only recently its become a problem?? no, the EU stuck their noses in, the media had a field day and no the fun has been taken from us sensible and like minded folk..

However, spending an hour and a half on a friday night, face to face with an eastern european who had a flick knife in his pocket and had threatened some people in town was enough to make me think that maybe there is some good in banning them..

I always thought you could carry a knife with a non fixed blade under three inches but if stopped by the police you had to have a good reason?

You can. Infact you can carry whatever sized knife you want... But you had better have good reason.

Off to Poland in November, with enough firepower to keep the best police sniper hiding for sometime, and one care a bit, yet you can bet someone will get arsey about a fixed blade other, many of us (12) will be carrying in their luggage
