Leather jackets vs fabric flame retardant?

Looking for recommendations.......usually on my back underneath rusty cars and fed up with spatter and holes in overalls. Anyone with experience of the flame retardant fabrics? I'm thinking spatter will create a hole but not ignite it? So will leather be the better solution ( obviously hotter to wear and more restrictive though). Views? TIA

I bought a welding jacket with only leather arms. Lincoln one (was not cheap)

Full leathers just too heavy...

All my work clothes got holes in them - as I don't ever wear it...

You haven't lived until you get the hot spatter in the ear hole yet or the one that finds its way down your sleeve
and the best is the red hot molten one that burns straight through ya leather boots and sizzles on the top of ya foot

Overall wise just look for any heavy cotton type,leather isn't the best(IMHO) for underneath motors cant be quite restrictive sort of,plus unless you're willing to spent they aren't cheap,stay away from the far eastern rubbish

I see there are leather jackets with fabric backs....could be safest...but spendy...

How about adding on localized protection ?
I see they sell leather sleeves, maybe a cape over the helmet if needed there, etc.

Thanks for the good ideas so far - my recent workaround was to use an old horse rug...heavy canvas type outer layer with some inner layers behind it - spatter is just absorbed by the top canvas layer and is then stopped by the intermediate layers. Might actually be fire retardant for horse safety but I've never managed to set it on fire . No I don't actually wear it - just place it over vulnerable parts of my anatomy ......just as well cos it must weigh about 15kg

Sort of like when you go for an X-ray, they hand you a heavy shield to put on sensitive bits...

BTW how does the horse feel about you using it's rug ?

Even very good FR fabrics will be damaged by spatter, the heavier and "better"* they are, the longer they hold out

*(i.e. Treated Wool Felt > Kermel/Nomex > Treated Cotton-Modacrylic Blend > Treated Cotton > Modacrylic > Untreated Natural Fibres).

Leather will hold up a lot longer, but it's extremely hot to wear for any length of time.

I would be sus about the intermediate layers, they're probably synthetic fill which could be nasty if you do manage to catch it alight.

Fibreglass welding blankets are relatively cheap (if you buy online, Toolstation and Screwfix seem to charge an arm and a leg)... Might be worth the investment?

I always wear a leather jacket when welding under plant/machinery, the leather welding hoods will also keep the sizzlers out of your lugs.

I bought this a couple of years ago off the bay evil. The brand name is "Fairlane Marian" navy blue, flame retardant welding jacket. The price was £8.99 with free delivery.
I looked through my purchase history, and unfortunately the seller no longer lists it. Anyway, it might be available elsewhere. Its light weight, and although I'm not a professional welder, it does the job for me.

I just use an old leather m/cycle jacket...3 sizes to big......does for me.....
Have 1/2 cow hide skin to make a leather apron.....plus it'll get a shield to protect my pacemaker from magnetic pulses.....I HOPE.....hahaha....

if you search evilbay you'll find sellers on there that sells proper welding overalls etc that are how would i say,"2nd's" so to say,or they over order,stuff that only the big firms buy not for joe public,have a look around
Main question is,if your getting lots of spatter all the time,i'd ask why is that,is something not prepped clean enough?

After having some molten metal go through the arm of my overalls, then shirt sleeve then burn a hole in my skin, causing me to shake my arm which sent the metal through the wrist of my shirt and more skin before lodging in my gauntlets causing more mischief, I've re-purposed an old leather jacket for under vehicle welding. Makes life much better!
