Stihl MS201 carburettor confusion

Hi all

I got this Stihl TS201 top handle chainsaw in the post today. I got it from ebay as spares or repairs due to the carb being missing.

The issue is - it's quite hard to tell what the carb should be when I search the usual sites!!

What I can tell for sure is that this particular saw is early enough that it does not have electrical wires for the carb. The casing also has manual mixture adjustment screw slots. There is also 2no linkages. And no primer bulb so one fuel line connection.

Here are photos I took whilst stripping it down:



Has anyone worked on one of these and have records of what the carb looked like etc? (Long shot I know!)

None of these saws had primer bulbs. It may help you to know the earlier model was called the 020T, then the MS200T, then MS201T

Im not too sure of the differences and believe many parts are interchangeable? If they are...

Either way genuine carb is not going to be cheap! Over £100 at LSE and then its a risk that the rest of saw is good.

Before you striped down have you put fuel in the plug hole and see if it farted a few times ?

First thing I'd do be going any where

It came with the exhaust off and scratches on the piston. So I have a new cylinder kit coming for it already



I didn't go for the cheapest cylinder kit - went for a WarTec one which still is aftermarket of course but should be as decent as those get

Excellent thanks for that. Searching MS201 or MS201T yielded nothing useful all carbs looked totally wrong.

I have ordered this one as I can't find a genuine one that looks exactly the same with 1x fuel line. If this aftermarket carb doesn't work I can also immediately return it for a refund

Clean the genuine cylinder up with brick acid and emery before you buy a new one, the aluminium transfer cleans off and the OEM cylinders are far better than copies plus you only need to buy a piston. I've done a few and only needed to replace one cylinder but that had a stripped plug as well.

That's a fair point there. I will try that tomorrow evening as the original cylinder was in decent shape and there are pistons available for £18 just means I'd need to return this kit which is fine. I do prefer the original Stihl cylinders

Definitely clean up the original cylinder, I've never had one that was unsalvageable. I would also recommend using Meteor pistons, they are excellent quality

I have cleaned up the original cylinder tonight and been steeping it in a strong solution of cement residue remover which I think so be similar to brick acid. (I don't have brick acid and local places likely don't either)

I have also been using 600 grit emery paper to clean the cylinder walls up but per these photos there are still signs of piston metal transfer. That doesn't concern me so much as more acid and sanding should take that put eventually. But there are other scratches in the cylinder wall which are cut into the wall. Very light mind but there and around the exhaust port side.

Hard to pick up in photos but here goes:






I'm thinking this cylinder may not be fit for long term re use and would waste a new piston.

Or am I looking for too high a standard here? If you can't feel the scratches with a finger nail are they OK to be ran like that? Again I do have a new War Tec brand cylinder kit coming in post so may be better to use it....

Edit - watched a video on this very subject. They say that what really matters is scratches above the exhaust port. I think those are there but minor enough to re use if I take another look and clean up tomorrow. If I can lightly sand that out, scotch pad and haven't went through the cylinder costing then it should be good?

I forgot to mention I have also located a used original Stihl correct carb. (Aftermarket one is coming too but may return it and rebuild the original carb for this saw)

I use 240 grit with WD40 as lube, there's more to come off that yet it will come up better.

Spirit of salts will remove that aluminium on the barrel, you can buy it in chemists over here.

And do you need to steep it for long fully immersed or just brush on locally and scrub off?

OK so it was steeping overnight in the other cement residue cleaning acid. I then used WD40 and 240, 320 & 400 grit followed by scotchbrite pad to remove as much as I dare without going through the cylinder coating. This is how it looks now:

There is only a couple of very small marks left which are completely smooth to feel. I don't want to sand much more incase the cylinder is damaged.

So im going to order up a new Meteor piston kit and send back the cylinder kit then. Which means I'm salvaging the original Stihl cylinder which no doubt is better quality than any aftermarket option.

I'm not sure it's the same. Spirit of salts is hydrochloric acid that's phosphoric acid.
When I use it I just dab it on with some paper towel, it will dissolve aluminium in front of your eyes very quickly so don't get it on the barrel itself. It's nasty stuff!

Just seem your last post, if that was spirit of salts you put the barrel in last night I doubt you'd have much of it left this morning

The marks on the barrel don't look too bad and if you can't feel them I'd say reuse it.

they dont have to be perfect as long as you get fair compression i think over 95 psi they work 115 and above ideal from memry but that failing as im getting older
