We were also told that if the "femoral" artery had been cut we had less than 5 minutes, thankfully I knew how to make a good job of stopping it and carrying the ratchet style "scissor clamps" in the first aid kit...
Good luck if you ever need to fix one, I came within a few mm of putting a big hole in said artery and what ever cuts its way to the artery is going to make a mess that gets in the way... In may case it was two hands full of fat and muscle and had 28 stitches to put me back together..
first thing I got to told to do is stop the bleeding in any way possible, I would rather be legless than lifeless..
I do remember dialling 911 in shreveport/bossier city louisiana 20 odd years ago, it didn't work, I was in the wrong part of town and that number didn't work! I think the 112/911 in the uk is aimed at the tourists that don't know to dial 999.
