and to be honest if he hadnt any training on that machine he shouldnt have been using it in the first place

it makes me wonder if they lied on there job apllication form saying they knew how to use said machines in the workshop

Because as demonstrated, people don't think. There are many, many instances on this very forum that demonstrate the same.

Owners manuals for older vehicles were once a mine of useful information on how to service and care for your car; now the focus seems to be warnings about not drinking the contents of the battery.

A bit of random information; who remembers the saxophone player Wesley Magoogan? He played for many well known artists in the 80s but lost a number of fingers to a circular saw and could no longer play his sax.

I guess he didn’t read the tool’s instructions……a real shame as he was amazing.

Seems to me by the council accepting responsibility it now gives room for Mr. Soday to sue.

There’s a chance he did it on purpose, just so he could sue.

I once worked with a guy, when I was a machine shop apprentice, and he’d stuck one of his fingers into a machine, to get time off ‘and a bit of compo’. He lost the first knuckle off a finger, eventually got £1200 compo, back in the 70’s, a fortune then, but reckons it was absolute agony that he’d not wish on his worst enemy. And given the choice he rather have kept his finger and given the money back.

The real danger in a workshop is complacency & tiredness.
I've trained hundreds of kids in the correct use of machines through C&G courses and most of them have been excellent. However put them in a workshop with time pressures, fatigue, complacency or worse a bully for a boss and corners get cut leading to fingers getting cut.

It's not easy as a young person to contradict or question the more experienced workers. I look back at the stuff I did as a novice steeplejack 35 odd yrs ago - mainly to do with exposure to toxic chemicals without proper respirators

Wow! all I can say to that is, thick, stupid prat! and as he was clearly tuned in to being one why he didn't employ a pratfall instead of self maiming.

My father used to be a cabinetmaker, and visited a blind workshop on a tour.
They had blind people running the table saw.
Safely I might add.

You can get saws that lock the blade solid the second it touches flesh. I saw it on tv a few years back. Unfortunately it literally destroys the blade stopping it, fires a steel pin into it, or some other such atrocity.

can be trained to operate the table saw safely.

I dont know what a "School Technician" is, but surely if he was using a table saw, he must have been trained.

There are actually things that are not straightforward to understand.
Such as blade hight just enough to go through the workpiece.
The use of a stick to push the smaller parts through the blade .
And things like that.
Those must be taught to users .
Circ saws are the only tool I'm terrified of , any wood working power tool really doesn't fit my skill and confidence of use.
Sawzall , jigsaw, belt sander, those the only woodworking power tools I'm confident with .
Everything else I'm scared of them.
And I'm a guy who works with killing machines like lathes, milling machines , radial arm drills , hydraulic presses, mechanical presses like shears and bender.
Moving heavy components etc .

I'm not scared about them I do respect them , cause I'm aware of what kind of the consequences if don't.
But woodworking tools are kinda like medieval weapons for me, I feel my blood cold whenever I'm in the 2 meters range from a planner for example.

Well I think that we should avoid the contact in first place.
Then I wouldn't care about the table saw getting destroyed cause it's not only the blade that comes to a brutally hard stop.

Looking at the pic, I’d imagine when using the saw you can’t really actually see the blade, without hunkering down a bit to see past the vacuum guard thing.

That's a good point.
Mobbing and working related stress are probably one of the biggest causes of accidents.
When you have to get the job done as fast as you can ...
Inevitably something get forgotten.
Maybe securing a workpiece, changing a feed rate, don't wasting time putting proper PPE for a quick few seconds operation.
Then stress is something deadly.
You can loose weight, sleep, consequently attention to what you're doing.
Because you're maybe thinking about something else or because you just do things repeatedly in complete mental blackout.
