Funny, there is a standing joke that anytime i go to look for a piece of machinery, it's always in Scotland or Wales, usually about as far away as you can go without getting wet feet. I wonder if it works the other way around...

Bought these today. £50 AND only two miles from home, which makes a change, as everything I want seems to be either at Inverness or Penzance.

Got 3/4 of a container of unused degreaser too ! Don't know if its the best thing for the job though.

The small one is going to used as an experimental coolant tank and pump for the lathe.

That's £60 for 20L that odourless kerosene.

Hadn't looked at the price of it. Seems quite a bargain then, especially as both pumps work !

Do you know if it evaporates ? I notice the Hazchem ? label shows it as being damaging to health, but does not show a flammable symbol, but being kerosene, I assume it would be ?

How am I supposed to dispose of the sludge, and the fluid when it is expired ? Bet they will not accept it at the local tip.

No it doesn't evaporate readily.
Its flash point is very high, even a spark landing on it will struggle to ignite it.

Put it on flammable material / rags though and like diesel it's very flammable.

Anything like that I usually pour in the used engine oil container at the tip. Take it in small tubs at a time and they don’t bat an eyelid, at our local one anyway.

What are the 2 half-open spanners at the bottom of the pic for, both are Snap on and made that way not butchered..


VWs are a big thing for them and they have just collected a Speedwell twin SU conversion + extra carbs.

The spare carbs have no adjuster on the bottom of the float bowl. Any idea what those carbs would be fitted to? 2 are new unused so might get used as donor bodies - info would be good before work starts.

Both main carbs have a pin through the bottom adjuster bolt, is this just to make it easier to grip? It doesn’t seem to connect to the drilling inside.

@Nomad those are Stromberg carbs, not SU’s adjusted by a key down through the oily bit.

And rather excellent ideas they are, from various manufacturers. We take a Facom one and carefully reshape it to a pattern, cut down in length too, to fit inside one of our machines - makes a one flat at time job on spring loaded nuts to unwound 50mm on 24 sub-assemblies from half a day of mind-numbing tedium to minutes.

The pair on the inlet pipes are early style, which were upgraded to the no-bottom-adjust type sometime in the late 60s / early 70s.
The early ones are adjustable by using a spanner on the nut and holding the pin or vice versa - I unrecall which.
The later ones had a special tool (available from motor factor shops for a quid) to reach down through the top (once you'd removed the damper cap) and it consisted of a long thin Allen key with a long collar that sat on the shoulder of the needle housing.

Strombergs were second only to SUs as an easy to setup and almost infinitely reliable carb.
The nicest thing about them was you could throw them a very long distance.
