We’re creating a new dog kennel at work. It’s meant we’ve had to have a bit of jig about and as part of that we’ve had pull down a bit of chain link fence and the posts holding it up.

One of them used to be used as a gate post, Robert who I work for says it was originally a bit of bore hole pipe.

Anyway one very hot angle grinder and 6 cutting discs later I’m a little surprised. It’s got an inch thick wall!

What possible reason could there be for having such a heavyweight bit of water pipe?!? It certainly wasn’t ever going to fail as a gate post!

Photo’s aren’t that clear it’s 5 inch pipe with a 3 inch bore.

Your thinking pipe the lays flat in a trench.

Bore hole pipe hangs vertically down a hole and might have to support hundreds of feet of itself ahnging from the top of the hole.

Yeah I guess I am, I suppose I was think along the lines that because a bore hole is drilled it wouldn’t be under too much strain, I hadn’t really considered there’d be a bit of dangle. Fair point.

Welding oxygen tanks, car injector lines, jetwash hoses, hydraulic portapak hoses, field and battleship gun barrels.

What is the wall thickness to diameter ratio of those?

Its what I was thinking, they also pump water down through middle of these to cool the cutting head. I don't think its a bore hole liner, they are normally a bigger internal diameter than that and thinwall because they are only used as a sleeve to lower a submersible pump down into.

Down hole drill tubes, probably a spun casting. We used to spin them at a foundry I worked in.
