4x4 Rear winch with rope routed to front?

My 4x4 buggy build is turning out to be very light and front heavy. There's virtually no weight at the rear besides the battery and tank, and this makes the suspension difficult to set up. I'm thinking of mounting the winch at the rear with the rope routed via fairleads or similar, under the car (or maybe over the exo cage) and to the front. I'm told this has been done before, but I wanted to check in before I commit to the idea. Has anyone done or seen this and any problems to watch for ?

I did this once on a off road suzki Jimmy,
Front mounted winch with a bit of tube running through the cage so the cable could be fed to the rear. Tube had a fairlead roller on each end.
Had to crimp a pin shackle onto the cable as the hook wouldn't fit through the rollers.
Another problem was the cable didn't seem to like the 2 tight turns at the front as it seemed to sap power.
Was good for pulling a boat in but the cable came out too high at the rear to work properly for recovery. It just pulled the truck down into the mud.
He asked me to make another roller setup to route the cable via the towbar mount but I just ended up putting the front winch on a removable plate and fitting an anderson to the rear.

Maybe a better way of doing it, just mount the winch on a storage point on the back but move it to the front and plug it in when you actually want to use it.

Plenty of military kit works like this. I also seem to recall they make special doughnuts to run modern synthetic rope through rather than elongated fairleads.

The foers Ibex uses a mid mount winch. The cable runs to the back crossmember, round a snatch block and out the front. gives you a single line pull on the front and a double line pull at the back

Land Rover 101 had similar, using pullies you could have front, rear or side pull.

I may be misremembering, but did the big 6x6 Scammell recovery truck have a winch that could be used front or back?

With a modern synthetic rope, it might be easier as you could route the rope as a rope and then splice the eye into it once through its guide system.

Don't they just have a blank end anyway that gets clamped to the drum, so just feed it drum end through the system

Because they’re hung under the belly of the vehicle

Scammels, AEC matador etc have a mid mounted winch you can use at either end I feel its the best of both worlds.
Easiest with a removable hook and just an eye on the rope

I remember seeing an AEC (Matador or Militant ?) like this with a fearsome looking winch centre mounted drum diameter was about two foot.

When you think about it, this will probably me more effective than a front mounted winch, especially if the fairleads could be under the axle centrelines. Will be pulling on all four wheels, whereas a front mounted mounted above the axle line will be lifting the rear wheels off the ground in a light vehicle. Even a heavy vehicle if the winch is powerful enough !

I was using a mk3 militant wrecker a few weeks back to winch a mates 6x6 Kraz truck out of a mud hole. Absolute machine!

Some of the big old clunkers of winches take some beating even by modern standards, got an old winch tractor with a Boughton on the back, its never failed to achieve.

Is that a Nuffield ? The trailer winch for some manual backup ?

BiL had a Broughton winch in the yard for years. Was not mounted on a vehicle and as Fil was a marine engineer, thought it was something to do with boats. Only found out what it was after he had weighed it in. Would have been fitted to one of the Fordson Majors here.

We tripped the overload on the milli! The kraz was well in. But she came out eventually. If I was to buy a wagon for showing it would have to be a militant. Horrific to drive on the road, but awesome for working!
