emergency telephone numbers

Recently sat a course on confined space ,one of the intresting facts that came out there are now three numbers that can be used in emergencies.....999......911(american ) and 112(european).....however if phoning from a mobile ,112 always goes to your local switchboard,either of the other numbers goes to a national switchboard and can therefore take longer to arrange the appropriate service for you....Only true for mobile phones, has anybody else heard of this?

I've heard that. It was also on a course that we were told. I've done confined space training as well - it might have been on that.

On the three/four occasions i've had to ring the emergency services it always seems to take forever to get put through. Especially when you have some bloke unconscious infront of you.

If its true why don't "THEY" advertise the number ?....surely mobile sellers could push the number for free? radio,tv etc etc

Heard of 112, didnt realise 911 would work too.

and I think 112 will use any network, not just the one you are on so less chance of "no service"

When you dial 999/112 or whatever you are put through to whichever BT 999 call centre is available. There's no such thing as your 'local' switchboard.

After they confirm your number and ask which service you are put through to whichever fire/police/ambulance control room is appropriate, your location is automatically triangulated via the mobile network and displayed in the control room. It isn't massively accurate, but will pin point your location to the nearest mast.

That's the process, it doesn't matter what number you ring, the time to arrange help will depend more on you knowing your location than anything else, preferably use a land line if available, those are pinpointed to an exact address as soon as they are dialled. It can be very frustrating trying to arrange an ambulance when someone is bleeding in front of you, but nowhere near as frustrating as it would be if we rocked up at the wrong location.

'fraid so! There's plenty out there.

112 was introduced to provide a common Europe wide emergency number and it works in tandem with 999, you dial it and talk to the same person as you would if you had dialled 999. I don't know about 911 but I wouldn't be surprised if it worked along the same lines.

Both 112 and 999 will work from a locked mobile keypad, I don't know what the technology involved is but they will also work in low signal areas where normal dialling results in 'no network coverage'. If I can't get a signal to speak to Control on their direct number I will get through on 999. These days the radios are far better so we don't have to do this too often.

If you really want a fast emergency response when you are working in remote areas, make sure you know where you are and what the nearest postal address is. Helicopters are great for finding random workers in the middle of a field somewhere, but they don't fly in adverse weather or darkness. In the course of a shift I can cover 200 miles and three counties so I wouldn't rely on local knowledge finding you.

I was taught 112 was the "proper" emergency number for severe emergencies...

Whilst on chainsaw training in the "remote" parts of Cannock we had to register our exact grid reference for work and a safe rescue point to six or eight figures if possible.
We were then told to ring 112 in any event and in a severe case, such as cutting or severing a leg to call from at least two mobiles, one from the accident point and the other from the recovery point ...

We were also told that if the "femoral" artery had been cut we had less than 5 minutes , thankfully I knew how to make a good job of stopping it and carrying the ratchet style "scissor clamps" in the first aid kit...


Others took the **** but when they found out how little time you had whilst "pumping" they soon became my best friends

If you can't find what to clamp you need to put your foot in the appropriate groin and put your weight on it, that's the sort of pressure required. A useful addition to a trauma kit if you are in the habit of loosing random limbs is the CAT tourniquet.

I've been told as such, they say the femoral arteries pump so hard it's impossible to hold with your hands

Thankfully chainsaw trousers offer some protection, but if it's a really powerful saw, or one with a carbide chain like I use, there's still a good chance of an accident if your "stupid"...
