Badly designed tool?

Ha ha! There's nothing wrong with it because it says that it's "Easy to use and safe". Don't you trust an honourable manufacturer?

I would lose a finger every time I used it. So a maximum of 10 uses, of course it's going to provide me with "Years of useful life". Sadly I won't be so useful with stumpy hands...

Incidentally, ever used one of these (see pic attached)? My brother had a man come to see him who was trying to open a bottle of wine with the corkscrew attachment. The cork came out unexpectedly, and his hand came up to his face. My brother is an eye surgeon. I'll leave you to complete the picture...

The human condition of trying as hard as possible to wipe itself out is very evident here, maybe thats just it it could have been developed by a disability aids company.
If we get them to chop all their fingers off then we can sell them utensils that dont require the use of fingers.
My personal feeling is how did this EVER make it market in our H&S obsessed times.

I got one similar to that in Lidl a few years ago.

I must admit, I'm VERY careful when I use it but it works really well, just a few strokes and the blade's razor sharp.

I wouldn't buy one though, not if they had one in Lidl

I doubt it would be so bad if the guard was a bit wider. That said I still wouldn't be keen on using one - I'm good enough at taking chunks out of my hands as it is...

Flexible plastic guard - 20mm ish wide v. freshly sharpened knife?.. Nah!

I can see the word "caution" on the guard, the small print probably says "not a handhold"

Lots of guys on worldseafishing reckon that type of sharpner is the mutts nutts.

The fact that you have it high up and work it by pulling it apart across your chest seems to prevent accidents , even on a boat bobbin on the oggin apparently.

Mine sits on the worktop, the blade sits in the vee and you pull it steadily through 3 times or so, they really aren't that bad though I'm not sure I'd trust that handheld one.
You'd have to be pretty damned clumsy to cut yourself while using the one I have!
You wouldn't believe how sharp the blade becomes, I love it!
Mrs can't understand why they say a sharp knife is safer than a blunt one, she'll learn the hard way one day.

...and cheaper in the long run.

Takes a bit more skill to use an oilstone without making the knife blunter than when you started.

Tip for you all- 6" bench grinder (which I'm sure many folk here have already) is the best too for knife sharpening. And far safer that that digit decapitation device!

It's allso the quickest way to knacker a good blade
