I've spent the last few days searching and be blowed if I can find what I would like, my criteria is as follows, under £300, gas is expensive here so running on pub gas, not got a good electricity supply- (France) so max around 160 amps, less wouldn't hurt as I've an old Miller 170 that works but crap on the thinner stuff. Mig mag only necessary, euro torch, step less wire speed control, stepless amp control, inverter technology. Primary use thin steel welding no point in tig facility unless was ac and dc, nice if supplied without torch and other accessories as I have plenty and if it kept cost down, prefer able to use 5kg spools. Prefer available in France but not essential. If I was a betting man I'd wager it doesn't exist.

GYS seems an obvious brand choice; is a French company and has a good reputation & there might be one in the right price ballpark local to you.

Lots other brands on Amazon if you want to take some risks with their longevity / warranty / support - some on here have these, maybe useful as a backup unit...

It probably does, but will be a generic Chinese machine with little to no aftersales support.

@8ob did a review of a blackline mig which gave good results , but as stated chineasium so back up mmight be a problem if you run into difficultes.

Why won't the miller 170 work with pub gas and .023 wire ?
It should do what you need.

If the stated goal from the OP is to work on thinner stuff, and the miller 170 presently
operates on his limited power, I don't understand the power upgrade need.

I weld car sheetmetal with a standard 120 vac 15 amp powered xformer welder.

Apparently his Miller 170 does not work well on thin material:

I cannot find a spec for the low-end current rating of a transformer-based Miller 170....
Maybe the machine needs some maintenance, or perhaps when using CO2 it runs too hot?
