first tick of the year

just strimming around the field gate , half hour later feel an itch on the back of my hand , see the tiny black speck and it wont brush off , realised its a nymph got the tyke off and splat between the nails . darn things are a nuisance but we have a abundance of roe dear so no chance of not getting them . Suprised it went into the vein on the back of my hand as they normally migrate straight to the arm pits or private parts . yes trousers tucked into socks but not a lot else you can do really is there?

Wearing gaiters will help to reduce the chance of ticks crawling up inside trouser legs. Clearly not much use in your case, though. Wearing long sleeves, and tucking shirts into trousers will also help reduce the chances of getting abdominal tick bites. As for hands...gloves of some sort, perhaps. Not sure which gloves would be best. Latex surgical gloves would stop them, but not very practical. Or midge mittens?

Trousers tucked into tall socks definitely helps. We have more than our share of the nasty little blighters here. It's our standard routine to check ourselves for ticks every night before going to bed. We also check right away after spending any time in the woods, deep grass, etc. Permethrin-sprayed (and dried before use) trousers/shirt seems to help quite a bit, as does a bit of DEET repellent, but ticks are tough little things and don't always read the repellant product labels. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if they're totally illiterate.

I've found that tick-repellent clothing helps a good deal. We make our own by spraying clothing with a permethrin treatment and letting it dry before use. The treatment lasts through a number of washes. Or we could just buy pre-treated tick repellent clothing.

hmmm, dont know if its suitable for humans ...but used to use on my dogs and was brilliant , anyone else with human use on this ??

I never had a wasp or bee sting either.

your lucky i have to take antihistamine tablets if get stung or mozzy bites otherwise get infected

Friends came round with their dog that had a tick in it's fore leg which they couldn't remove, because we have a tick removing thingy.

They'd smothered it with vaseline (old wives tail) so the removing thingy just slid out from under it however hard they tried, made the dog squeal.

In the end they gave up and took it to the vet, turned out it was a wart!

Expensive one too!

Tick picks are very handy for removing the little b*sds! I carry a couple of them in the van as have been had by them many times.
Yes they can carry Lyme, both myself and dad have had it in the past, neither ourselves or our doctors realized what it was to start with, and it was only because my dad had had it I knew about it and asked to be checked out.
Not very nice at all!!

Knat bites I have had loads of - and they swell up and itch if I don't take piriton tablets.

I seen loads of people get stung by wasps outside drinking from bottles or cans. This why I never drink from bottles - always use a glass.

There are some with arthritis that deliberately get stung, to alleviate their pain.
