Horse urine

Seeping through the floor of swmbo’s horse box on to her not very old brake calipers, seized solid and fried her discs causing a wheel to lock up.

Nice flat spot

20mm bolt to draw of the hub cap

Proved way too much for the breaker bar so used the petrol nut gun and 80mm socket to undo the hub nut. Wouldn’t normally use my chrome sockets but it’s all I had.

Not good

Ordered new discs and pads, now need to try and free the sliders on this.

id have said it was brake disc failure that caused that

as soon as those brakes was applied again it would have taken the discs past the point of failure any further breaking would have put that vehicle into a very dangerous situation

Gaz it’s the sticking caliper that caused the disc to fail.


Situation normal, pad pressure equal both sits of the disc

Pad on the right on the sticking side of the slider wears leaving a gap

When forces are applied now the disc is being shunted sideways until it meets the other pad, bare in mind this is cast steel and isn’t big into being flexed.

You can get caliper slider repair kits for pretty much every HGV going, even the dealers will sell them.
Take a look at the universal components catalogue if you cannot access a catalogue most proper factors will have access to one.
Remanufactured calipers are not that expensive, I did one a few weeks ago on a Scania £275.


Do not just free them up they will not last very long at all.

Disc brakes on HGVs are some of the best things that have happened in the last 20 years, unless the vehicle stands around a lot in which case they are a maintenance nightmare!

It's actually crazy how fast animal urine has a devastating effect on vehicles!
I do mainly farm electrics, over the years the damage it has caused to at least 3 vans is unreal, the last one I had the chassis ended up rotten to the state of thick card in places.
Breaks take some punishment, the heat and cold doesn't help or the fact they are not the easiest to get at with a pressure washer to remove the urine.

Remanufactured calipers are not that expensive, I did one a few weeks ago on a Scania £275.

Its not too bad, local truck factors have quoted £220 a caliper, discs £80 each and a set of pads £60. I will take the other side apart (feeding end of the horse) and see what they are like.

A mate had a really nice old CF Bedford, in excellent condition that he picked up for peanuts. They weren't worth much at the time, so he didn't look after it all that well, but mechanically it was a tough old brute. What killed it was various small animal pyiss over just a couple of years. Totally rotted the entire rear body off the lower half. When he drove it the whole rear end was flapping up and down like a kite.

Done a bit of shopping, pushed a new tyre on the rim, new discs, recon calipers and pads.

Bolted up the new discs

Fitted the chamber and carrier

ABS sensor got fried, not so sure it was ever connected being a tag axle.

I worked at a village garage about 10 years ago in Essex, we had a pump attendant who would check your oil level , tyre pressures etc ( Remember them??) Anyhow we had loads of customers with horse boxes, one day one of the regular customers came in for fuel and wanted her tyre pressures checked so the pump attendant started doing them, he had to get down on his hands and knees to do the rears , when the horse inside decided to relieve itself soaking him before he could get out of the way. After that he refused to check horse box tyre pressures
