Hold down clamps

Having got the steel welding bench I can now see a problem if I want to clamps something prior to welding.

I do not want to go the drilling rows of 18mm holes.

Has anyone else come up with a solution?

I am looking at designing an adjustable clamp with a magnetic base.

Magnets and welding don’t always mix too well.
I’d be inclined to drill and tap a few 1/2” holes that will take studs for clamping. You won’t need a zillion of them, but no matter where you do put them you’ll need some more nearby.

Hire a mag drill and cutter for a day. Done.

Cut the top bit off some old "G" clamps( not the screw end),weld a bit of thick plate to that,then all you need to do is tack plate to bench(i take it has a metal top?) the end nearer the screw,job done,quick removal is with a smack of the BFH

Nice table, reckon you should sell that and buy a slotted table. They come up for sale on ebay/market place quite often.

Well all of the commercially available ones I have seen and also homemade ones have 5/8"/16mm holes

These are not hard to drill & tap yourself.
