Anyone side hinged their up and over garage door?

As per the title, only one door on the garage, an up and over fibre glass panelled metal framed horsman door.

It’s a pain in the backside I’m in and out of it so often, don’t like to leave it open both for weather/the wrong kind of eyes seeing in.

The cheapest option is to somehow use the existing door but I can see this being a potential nightmare/impossibility.

Just wondering if anyone had successfully made their existing up and over door into a side hinged one.

That's a nice looking door. Mine didn't look that good new. Even worse now when I backed my van onto the drive, just after I had had a tow bar fitted!

I know someone that hung the metal type up and over doors on side hinges, don't know about fibreglass.

I hung my metal up and over using large field gate bands and crooks.

Not me, I changed the pita roller door to a pair off barn doors about 5 years ago. Best decision

I have a double door on our garage making its contents visible to the baseball and soccer fields as they come to park. I’m going to give these a try. They have single car ones too.

I once put hinges on an up and over either side then cut it right down the middle and fitted a hasp & staple lock, turned out ok.

I would have thought a Judas Gate could be fitted. A steel frame around the opening attached to the existing bracing should restore the original structural integrity.

I'm so glad someone suggested that because I can make my joke again.

Under normal circumstances, you might get away with chopping up a door but look at the construction. Then imagine cutting fibreglass, reinforcing the cut edges on both the door and the aperture. Then you still have to cut and shut the existing reinforcement and keep the weight down or it will never open/shut properly.

Much easier, better, quicker and cheaper to remove the entire door, sell it and buy a steel version if you want a cat flap in an up-and-over.

Why would I call it a "cat flap"? Well, a door in a door is an interesting concept and I just wanted to use the excuse to reveal one of my favourite little factlets: Sir Isaac Newton invented the catflap, same bloke what invented gravity.

PS I am never going to look that up on Snopes. If that turns out to be untrue these days, I don't want to know. It was true before the internet ruined everything.

I have odd sized garage doors, one big door and one smaller one, less effort to open, less room taken up when the doors are open and much more privacy when only the small one is open. I use the small one 99% of the time..

I would cut that door off centre after bonding a wood support to the inside behind a glazing bar.

Then cut down the middle of the wood to leave a 2' 6" ish door at one side.

You'll then have a normal door for yourself and the option of opening both for bigger stuff.

Bonus is less weight on the hinges, and a lot more privacy, I wouldn't worry about the cut line between the doors at all.

forget using that door any repair to the material after cutting it is going to be fun to do and it wont look right from day one

my advice build new steel framed door and surround and try on what you want to fit and make the stuff needed for it before you get it all galvanised if you want it to last years

Have a look on Facebook marketplace. Round here so many people are converting their garages to extra rooms there is a large choice of cheap garage doors for sale. I got lucky and found a set of metal barn door style for 50 quid.

The whole estate has them, job lot by the developer, they do look nice but it does look a little more tired in real life than on the photo, there is the odd crack in the fibreglass too, just superficial.

I did think about this but there isn’t really a suitable place for it to go, and then i’d lose the space for the door inside too.

That is what I'm going to do - make three sections to replace the up and over. One will open as an access door and the other two fold out of the way when full opening needed. Frame will be angle iron with timber infill panels.

This is the kind of thing I had in mind, just not sure how it’d go with it being fibreglass. And once it’s cut there’s no coming back.
