Is this a problem and how do I disassemble? Drill press components.

I am stripping my drill press to refurbish. I want to remove the bearings from this piece of metal and can't figure out how to do it. Whilst I was looking at it, I noticed a crack on the metal. I can't tell whether it goes all the way through the metal.

Is this normal or a problem? If a problem, is it usually possible to replace this component without resorting to machining a new one?

Is that part where the taper of the drill goes?

If so it needs replacing

Looks like the pully shaft, is is splined in the inside? If so that will make machining a new one quite difficult.

Post photos of both ends of the shaft to, this should show whats needed to remove the bearings, if it runs true and the bearings feel ok, I would reuse them.

I put my finger inside and I can feel the split there too. Also, when spun it seems to catch on each spin.

I'd just re-assemble it and worry about replacement when it actually breaks in half (Probably never).

I would throw the lot in the bin and spend the amount of money you will plough into that on a British old bench drill like a Meddings, Startrite ,Ajax, Boxford...these drills will be around drilling straight holes long after Chinese units are turned into garden benches etc. Sorry to be harsh but if you know then you know

Ouch, this is my project and the Draper drill press is older than me (manufactured 1981).

What's the part called? How are the bearings attached/removed? How would this damage have occurred, is it from stress from overheating?

It's a strange looking crack could be a manufacturing defect that has always been there. What is wrong with the bearings? taking stuff apart can sometimes do more harm than good, I confident this is one of those times.

You can see where the bearings are pressed against a shoulder so you would have to support the bearings and press the shaft out, this will likely damage the bearings, If you use a hammer and drift there is a chance you will damage the splines so use something soft.

There are no visible signs of overheating.

The issue is when rotating it seems as though something catches on each complete rotation/a set point in rotation.

I want to clean and regrease, I thought I would be able to remove them easily so I dipped them in mineral spirits thinking the next step would be to take them off the shaft to check for grime before applying new grease.

I've never removed bearings unless they slip off the shaft and don't have any specific tools for it.

I appreciate it's an option, it's not one I would choose in this situation though.

I reckon it was a fault in the steel bar before the part was made. We used to get the occasional length of it when I worked in the machine shop years ago. I can’t remember the name for it, but it was a fault in the original lump of steel they drew out into lengths, so it stayed there permanently.

That's very interesting to know. In some respects that's good to know a it's less likely to b stress related. Also, maybe I can get hold of a length of it? The name is the next step.

are you going to replace the bearings and is the bit in-between a spacer or is that fixed

If I need to replace the bearings I will. The bit in between feels like plastic and might be a spacer. It can be pushed towards the side a bit but is held onto the shaft like the bearings (the hole in the middle must be bigger).
