Just had a quote from Makita for the repair of my DUC353Z chainsaw, having already bought a replacement off eBay.....

That is more than I payed for my Echo 2511!

To quote them

Is not really fair comparison as this has similar power to a 25cc. The Echo weighs under 3kg, fueled up, with more power. Petrol wins in my opinion.

Had a rook of petrol chainsaws over the years and got pe--d off with them not starting in the following year. (same with strimmers)
I find the saw + 2 spare 5Ah batteries is ideal for my use. Granted if you're an aborist or lumberjack then petrol is better.

my 16" Echo gets used rarely now but still starts second pull.....never has much done to it other than a blast with an airline.....
8 years old......
PS looking fpr a decent tiny elec hand held saw for small branches but wont pay hundreds of £'s.....waiting for a Lidil tool to show up...

actually most hand held equip just aint worth spending big money on these days.....

I've been repairing power tools for a while now & Makita generally are cheap for genuine parts. Recently repaired a mates 240v Makita chainsaw by fitting a new stator, cost less than £50. 18v drill parts are relatively cheap too.

But your saw being brushless means they are much harder to diagnose & expensive to repair!

eg - instead of a switch which would cost a few quid to repair on a normal tool you have to fit a complete control unit, costing £132 in this case.

I had a brushless cordless impact driver & I narrowed the fault to the control board. There wasn't much I could do as the board was heavily coated in a potting compound but I tried what I could anyway. I got the tool to give one kick before the magic smoke escaped from the board. The cost of a new board was more than the tool was worth so it went to the spare parts/scrap bin.

I have a suspicion that they keep the brushless engine and controller pieces close to the cost of a new machine to deter people from using the parts to pimp their Fakita.
