Best way to fix this?

I got this vice with a bench drill I bought. It’s a nice little vice but has been butchered by its previous owner.

What’s the best way to fill in the missing bits, make some sort of shuttering and fill it with JB weld, or is there a better way?

It’s missing too much of it’s material to sit some thinner items flat on the bottom.

That’s the worst chewed up vice I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been around a while.
It could be repaired, but I think a skip is the best place for it.

Yeah I think every time they drilled something they hit the vice instead of the whopping great big gap in the middle of it.

Yee bunch of pessimists

Onward with the repair….

Made some shuttering, superglued and the backed with double sided sticky tape in the hope that the peel off paper of the tape would prevent the JB weld from sticking too much to the shuttering. (Sunny day so done in the garden).



Clamped it in place using the bottom of the jaw

A bit in the bottom to help stop it dropping out whilst going off


Checking with a ‘straight edge’



Shows how much material is missing


Filled and going off. Left it high for machining back flat.


Had a bit left over so slapped some on the other side. I’ll see if this side works before attempting the other side.

No idea if it will be a success and how well JB weld will mill but time will tell.

True, but it only gets light use so it will be fine and probably stronger than we give it credit for.

The JB weld had set and got chance to get it on the mill.

The shuttering came straight off no drama. Just one small piece of wood where the tape wasn't.


Set up on the mill.



It came out well.



A clean up with some emery.


I've filled the other side and awaiting that going off.

Just need to file off the lip underneath
