How long will it last

Hi,

am thinking of switching to a larger bottle of argon/co2 from the hobby bottles. I think the hobby bottles last about 10 mins, and cost £12.

I am looking at a 10ltr bottle at 200 bar for £30 and a £8 per month rental.

How long will the gas last in the bottle at say 15lts/min use ? Is it worth switching ?

It will be more like 10 lpm in practical terms so a couple of hours solid but it's a lot less than almost £1 a minute in real terms and you will not need to break off to fetch gas due to running out and have the frustration of being without at the most inconvenient time as long as you keep an eye on your gauge.

10ltr * 200 bar = 2000ltr

2000/15 = 133 minutes

At the normal rate of 10 LPM it will last 200 minutes of welding. Usually a bit less due to losses.

Hi Grayam,
I have just started distributing the hobby gas size bottles, and the info I got from my supplier is that the 10 litre bottles are good for approx 5 hours of constant gas flow, obviously dependant on the flow rate you set.
The fill pressure on the bottles is 137 bar not 200, (at least the ones I have) so that will reduce the time according to the calculations of a previous post.
I have no idea how to calculate it myself.

To work it out how long a bottle will last
S (bottle size in litres) x P (bar pressure) / F (flow rate in litres per min, usually 10)

So for a 10 litre bottle at 137 bar

10 x 137 / 10 = 137 minutes or 2 hours and 17 minutes

Graham , I dont know how long the bottle will last but the Argoshield light Volkzone offer from BOC cost me £60 for a size Y ( this is one years rental including the first fill ) originally filled to 230bar dont know how many litres but its a large bottle and still well over half full , already had at least 5 hours use , this has to be the cheapest gas if the offer is still on . I looked to see if an independant company could match the price , some seem to offer a similar size bottle but then you find they fill it to half the pressure so no better than BOC .
